Ajax Racing to Register Arokodare for European and Eredivisie Matches
Ajax have the striker they wanted. Now they just need the paperwork to catch up.
On Wednesday afternoon, the club formally applied for Tolu Arokodare’s work permit, according to De Telegraaf. The clock immediately started ticking. Journalist Mike Verweij called it “a race against the clock”, and that is exactly what it is for Ajax’s technical staff and administration.
Urgency for European Competition
The sporting urgency is obvious. Ajax all but killed off their Conference League qualifier with a 1-4 away win over FK Vojvodina, one and a half feet already in the next round. They can finish the job at the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Thursday, a night that should feel routine but carries a hidden deadline.
Once this tie is wrapped up, Ajax must submit a fresh squad list to UEFA for the next qualifier, where Shelbourne or Nomme Kalju await. That list has to be in by Wednesday evening, 5 August, at the latest. Ajax want Arokodare’s name on it. No debate, no delay.
Pressure from the Coach
Jordi Cruyff will spend the coming days watching his inbox as much as the training pitch. The moment the work permit drops, Ajax intend to register the Nigerian immediately for European competition. Miss that window, and a key attacking option sits out the next round before he has even pulled on the shirt.
The pressure doesn’t stop with Europe. Coach Míchel wants the 1.97-metre forward available for the Eredivisie opener away to PEC Zwolle on Sunday 9 August. For that to happen, Ajax must lodge Arokodare’s registration with the KNVB by 12.00pm on Friday 7 August. Lunchtime on Friday could decide whether he starts the season in the squad or in the stands.
Avoiding Last-Minute Scramble
Inside the club, the hope is to avoid any last-minute scramble, to push the formalities through in time so Míchel can use him straight away. Up front, Arokodare will be thrown into direct competition with Marcos Leonardo, the Brazilian signed from Al-Hilal for just under twenty million euros. One arrives on a sizeable permanent deal, the other on a shorter leash but with serious upside.
Because Wednesday brought more than just forms and deadlines. It also delivered confirmation: Arokodare has joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a one-season loan. Ajax will pay a modest fee to the Premier League side and hold an option to buy set at twenty million euros.
A towering striker, a loan with a big buy clause, two competitions demanding instant results, and a calendar full of cut-off times. Ajax have their man. Now the question is simple: can the bureaucracy move fast enough for him to matter from day one?
