Alex Mowatt Joins Derby County from West Bromwich Albion
Derby County have finally got their man.
Alex Mowatt has completed a permanent move from West Bromwich Albion, signing a two-year deal for a fee understood to be in the region of £600,000 – far below the £2m figure that had been circulating in the West Midlands.
The 29-year-old midfielder underwent a medical and wrapped up the formalities of the transfer today, ending a five-year stay at the Hawthorns and answering a long-standing call from Derby head coach John Eustace.
A long chase pays off
Eustace has been tracking Mowatt for some time. Derby wanted him last summer and never really let the idea go. While Mowatt penned a two-year contract extension at West Brom to stay put, Derby kept watching, waiting for an opening.
Now they’ve moved. And with purpose.
Derby’s interest has always been rooted in what Mowatt brings in the thick of a Championship campaign: control, craft and a left foot that can build attacks from deep. His experience at this level, and his ability to dictate play from the base of midfield, are understood to be central to why Derby pushed so hard to get this over the line.
Proven at this level
Born in Doncaster, Mowatt first emerged at Leeds United, coming through their academy before stepping into the first team. From there, his career gathered momentum.
A move to Barnsley followed, where he became captain and a key figure in their charge to the Championship play-offs in 2021, making more than 140 appearances for the club. He also spent time on loan at Oxford United, sharpening his game in the EFL before his big switch to West Brom.
Valerien Ismaël took him to the Hawthorns on a free transfer, and the then-Baggies boss did not hold back in his assessment at the time, describing him as an “outstanding midfield player” with “outstanding qualities and mentality”, highlighting his long-range threat and danger from set-pieces, as well as his work rate and energy.
Mowatt also has England youth pedigree, having represented his country at under-19 and under-20 level.
Still sharp, still involved
This is not a player arriving cold. Mowatt has already featured for Albion this season, starting in their 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Rotherham and playing 73 minutes before being replaced by Conor Townsend.
He also knows what it takes to operate in a promotion-chasing environment. A loan spell at Middlesbrough saw him involved as they finished fourth in the Championship, adding another layer of experience to a CV built almost entirely in the cut and thrust of the second tier.
Now that know-how belongs to Derby.
The fee, the timing, the profile: it all points to a signing made with a clear plan in mind. The question now is simple – can Mowatt become the heartbeat of a Derby side with ambitions of climbing back to where they believe they belong?
