Alkorta: Egos, Not Talent, Trouble Real Madrid’s Mbappé and Vinicius
Real Madrid’s biggest problem is not talent. It’s temperament. At least, that’s how Rafa Alkorta sees it.
The former Los Blancos defender believes the much-hyped partnership between Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior has stalled not because of what they can’t do with the ball, but because of who they are when they share a dressing room.
“Since Mbappe arrived, the issue has been one of egos,” Alkorta said. “I’ve never understood the whole ego thing, nor did I experience it in a dressing room, but the reality is that the connection hasn't quite clicked.”
It’s a brutal assessment of a duo built to terrify defences and sell shirts in equal measure. Mbappé is a 50-goal-a-season phenomenon. Vinicius, at his best, is one of the most destructive wide forwards in the game. On paper, it should be devastating. On grass, it has flickered instead of burned.
Alkorta believes José Mourinho now holds the key.
“Mbappe scores 50 goals a season, and hopefully, Mourinho can get the two of them performing well together,” he said. “If Vinicius stays, Mourinho will demand things from him that previous coaches couldn't get. He’s surely already made his expectations clear.”
That “if” around Vinicius is shrinking. Representatives of the Brazilian have already sat down with Real Madrid to discuss extending his deal beyond 2027. Talks, by all accounts, have moved in the right direction, with both sides described as moderately optimistic after edging closer in negotiations.
For Alkorta, that alone is a win.
“Fans will be happy that he’s close to renewing,” he insisted. Because for all the frustration around his form, letting a player of Vinicius’s ceiling walk away at 26 would be a staggering admission of failure.
Yet the ex-defender did not spare him either.
“Mourinho is trying to do what neither Xabi Alonso nor [Alvaro] Arbeloa could manage with the Mbappe-Vinicius duo,” Alkorta said. “They’ve had very little chemistry with the ball and none at all off the ball. I think Vinicius's last two years haven't been good.”
That line cuts to the heart of Madrid’s attacking puzzle. With Mbappé installed as the reference point and Vinicius searching for his best version, the balance has looked awkward. Runs not made. Passes not played. Pressing done in different rhythms. A partnership that should feel instinctive has instead felt forced.
Mourinho’s job is to turn that tension into a weapon.
The schedule offers him a controlled laboratory before the real tests arrive. Real Madrid face Ferencvaros in a friendly on Saturday, then Deportivo La Coruña four days later. After that, there is no hiding place: the 2026/27 Liga campaign opens away to Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium on August 22.
These are not just warm-up games now. They are auditions. Rehearsals for a front line that must learn to share the stage.
If Mourinho can fuse Mbappé’s ruthless efficiency with a reborn Vinicius, Madrid will have an attack to frighten Europe. If he can’t, those egos Alkorta talked about won’t just shape the dressing room — they could define the entire season.
