Andrea Pirlo Withdraws from Italy Manager Role Amid Betting Company Controversy
Andrea Pirlo has confirmed he is no longer a candidate to become the head coach of the Italian national team. The former midfielder, known for his time with Juventus and AC Milan, expressed deep disappointment after his candidacy was halted due to his commercial ties with a Russian betting company.
A Promising Opportunity Collapses
Following the withdrawal of big names like Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti, Pirlo emerged as the leading choice to guide Italy's rebuild. Reports suggested he had agreed to a four-year contract worth €1.5 million per year. This plan, strongly supported by the FIGC’s technical director Paolo Maldini and special advisor Leonardo, both former AC Milan teammates of Pirlo, has now fallen apart. The federation finds itself back at square one just when it seemed they had found their man.
Complications from Betting Company Association
The main obstacle was Pirlo’s role as a global ambassador for the Russian betting firm Fonbet. Italy enforces strict laws on gambling advertising, and his link to this company posed a serious conflict of interest for a public position tied to the state. After news broke that he was no longer being considered, Pirlo addressed the situation in an Instagram Story statement.
"Out of respect for the institutions, the federation and everybody involved, I have chosen to remain silent until now. However, after learning last night that I am no longer a candidate for the Italy national team head coach position, I feel it is necessary to clarify a few points."
He added that throughout his career, both as a player and coach, he has always respected the laws of the countries he worked in and honored his contracts. The partnership under scrutiny originated during his time working in the United Arab Emirates and was purely commercial and sporting in nature.
No Political Meaning Behind Partnership
The 2006 World Cup winner rejected any political interpretation of his deal with Fonbet, criticizing attempts to frame it otherwise.
"Attributing political meaning to this collaboration means attributing convictions to me that I have never expressed and do not hold... It is regrettable that a decision based on sporting grounds was quickly dragged into a public debate that ended up assigning motives and intentions to my name that never existed. My love for Italy does not depend on a job."
FIGC Faces New Challenges Ahead
The breakdown of the agreement places Maldini and the FIGC in a tough spot. A meeting set for Tuesday, expected to confirm Pirlo's appointment, will now be used to restart the search just before the UEFA Nations League campaign begins. Despite his disappointment, Pirlo expressed gratitude towards the federation's leadership.
"I wish to thank Maldini and Leonardo for the respect and faith they showed in me. I know their competence, seriousness, and the love they have always dedicated to Italian football."
