André Onana’s Manchester United future may be on pause again, but his name is still being thrown into Premier League conversations.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper has officially rejoined Trabzonspor on a second consecutive season-long loan for the 2026-27 campaign, this time again without an option to buy. His parent deal at Old Trafford runs until June 2028, yet his profile continues to attract attention in England.
Fortune: Onana still tailor-made for top Premier League sides
Speaking to Premier Bet, former South Africa international Quinton Fortune underlined why elite English clubs should still be watching Onana closely. Not because of his shot-stopping headlines, but because of what he can do with the ball at his feet.
"Andre Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League," Fortune said, pointing straight at a quality modern coaches obsess over: building from the back.
Managers want their attacks to start with the goalkeeper. Onana fits that blueprint. Fortune stressed how the 30-year-old can launch attacks in an instant, not with hopeful clearances, but with precision.
"When you’ve got a goalkeeper like Onana who can ping a ball 50, 60 yards to your striker or midfielder and break the lines with his passes, that can make a huge difference, and he’s one of the best at it," he added.
The ability is not in question. Confidence is.
Onana’s high-risk style means every error is magnified. One mistake, and the replay runs all week. Fortune acknowledged that brutal spotlight, insisting the keeper simply needs to rediscover his belief.
"He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it. I hope he can get back to his best because when you need a goalkeeper to play out from the back, he can be outstanding."
Chelsea’s new leaders: Welbeck and Henderson
Onana wasn’t the only topic on Fortune’s mind. The former United midfielder also weighed in on Chelsea’s summer business, particularly the arrivals of Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson under Xabi Alonso.
Fortune didn’t hide his disappointment that Welbeck’s return wasn’t to Manchester.
"Xabi Alonso made some good signings for Chelsea this summer but I wish we could have seen Danny Welbeck return to Manchester United," he admitted to Premier Bet.
For Fortune, those two signings say as much about Alonso’s reading of the Chelsea dressing room as they do about the players themselves. Experience. Voice. Standards. That’s what he believes Alonso has targeted after his time at Real Madrid, where strong personalities shaped the environment.
"By signing Welbeck and Jordan Henderson he wants to bring in some leaders to set good examples which you need at a club like Chelsea, especially after the experience Alonso had at Real Madrid."
Alonso, Fortune suggested, has looked around Stamford Bridge and sensed a gap.
"He’s looked at the Chelsea dressing room, felt that it was lacking something, and brought in the players with the right personalities and experience to make a difference in Henderson and Welbeck. They are not only top, top players but great professionals too."
So while Onana tries to rebuild his rhythm in Turkey, his name lingers over the Premier League conversation. And at Chelsea, Alonso has made his move early: a dressing room that once leaned on John Terry and Frank Lampard now turns to Henderson and Welbeck to set the tone for what comes next.
