The former England winger, now with PT Prachuap in Thai League 1, was involved in a bizarre pre-match incident at Pattani on Saturday that quickly went viral. As Townsend went through his warm-up, a member of the home staff appeared to lose control of a heavy pitch roller, which then trundled straight into the 35-year-old.
Townsend’s left leg was briefly trapped under the machine, sending a jolt of concern through everyone watching. For a moment, it looked serious.
Then he got up. And, later, he got on.
Despite the scare, the ex-Tottenham and Crystal Palace attacker came off the bench late in the game and played his part in a 3-0 win for Prachuap, turning what could have been a grim story into one of the strangest near-misses of his career.
The footage, inevitably, exploded across social media. A former Premier League winger and England international being run over by a pitch roller in a Thai League warm-up is the kind of clip the internet devours.
Townsend, a regular pundit on ITV, responded in the way he knows best – by leaning into the joke. On Instagram, he referenced a recent post where he had contrasted a sun-soaked Thai away day with those famously unforgiving trips to Stoke’s windswept ground.
“It turns out Stoke away wasn’t so bad after all. Swipe to see why,” he wrote on his Instagram story, pointing followers towards the now-infamous clip.
The Thai football community quickly joined in. One post hailed him as “The King of Memes in Thai League history”. Townsend replied with a simple “trust me” and four laughing emojis, embracing his unexpected new status as a cult figure in his adopted league.
He has played in World Cups qualifiers, London derbies and high-stakes Premier League battles. Now he has a story that tops almost all of them.
Stoke away might be cold. But it doesn’t come with a runaway pitch roller.
