Anthony Joshua Names His Next Opponent After Tyson Fury Clash
Anthony Joshua has already pinpointed who he wants to face after his upcoming showdown with Tyson Fury. The two fighters are scheduled to meet at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on December 11th, a bout many consider the biggest in British boxing history.
This fight has faced numerous delays over the past decade, with attempts to finalize a venue repeatedly falling through. Finally, the long-anticipated clash is set to take place in Wales.
WBA 'Super' Heavyweight Title May Be at Stake
The battle between Fury and Joshua could also involve the WBA's 'Super' heavyweight championship. If confirmed, this would be the first time the 'Super' belt is contested by two fighters who currently do not hold a world title. This adds extra weight beyond mere bragging rights.
Meanwhile, Russian heavyweight Murat Gassiev stands as the WBA 'regular' heavyweight champion after Oleksandr Usyk vacated his titles earlier this year. Gassiev defended his crown successfully in July against Peter Kadiru.
Gassiev's camp has formally objected to the possibility of the Fury vs Joshua fight being for the 'Super' title. John Wirt, Gassiev's co-promoter and legal advisor, demanded that the WBA deny any reports suggesting otherwise, emphasizing that Gassiev deserves recognition as the sole WBA world heavyweight champion.
"If anyone should be fighting for the WBA Super heavyweight title, it is Murat Gassiev, the reigning champion, not two boxers who currently hold no world title between them," said Wirt.
Joshua’s Intentions Are Clear
After the Fury fight was announced, Joshua spoke to talkSPORT and confirmed his plans for what comes next. When asked about his following opponent, Joshua simply replied with two words: "Murat Gassiev."
According to WBA regulations, the 'Super' champion must defend the title against the 'Regular' champion. Some fighters avoid such matches by vacating their belts to dodge less lucrative or less popular fights.
Given that Gassiev is not seen as highly marketable, it’s understandable that Joshua might earn much less if he takes that fight compared to the massive payday expected against Fury.
Still, Joshua appears ready to respect the rules and face Gassiev if he wins in December, a move likely welcomed by Gassiev’s team.
