Antonio Cassano Meets Lionel Messi: A Fan's Experience

Antonio Cassano has shared plenty of dressing rooms with stars. Real Madrid, Roma, the Italy national team – he’s seen egos and icons at close range. Yet a visit to Inter Miami’s training base left even him sounding like a wide-eyed fan.

The reason, of course, was Lionel Messi.

A World-Class Player Turned Speechless

Cassano travelled to Florida and spent extended time with Messi and his family, an experience that clearly rattled the usually outspoken former forward. Speaking on the Viva El Futbol podcast, he admitted that standing in front of the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner stripped him of his usual bravado.

"He spent an hour and 40 minutes with me and my family. We talked about many things. He treated me in a way I never expected. He’s the only person that, when I see him, I can’t speak, I can’t say anything," Cassano said.

This is a man who shared a pitch with Zinedine Zidane, Francesco Totti and Ronaldo. Yet in Miami, he found himself tongue-tied.

Messi Shrugs Off the ‘Greatest’ Debate

At some point, Cassano forced himself to say what millions argue every day. He looked Messi in the eye and asked the question that fuels endless debates across continents.

"Leo, do you even realize that you are the greatest player the history of soccer has ever seen?"

Messi’s reply cut straight through the noise that surrounds his name. No interest in rankings. No appetite for the GOAT conversation that dominates social media.

"Antonio, whether I’m the No. 1, No. 2, No. 5, No. 10 or No. 15, what difference does it make to me? It changes nothing for me. I don’t listen to whether I’m first, second or third. I have passion and love for soccer."

That has always been the contradiction with Messi: a career that screams for superlatives, carried by a personality that keeps pushing them away. The World Cup, the Champions Leagues, the Ballons d’Or – he files them under consequence, not purpose. The purpose, as he tells it, is the game itself.

“Three or Four More Years” – Messi’s Timeline

The most striking line from their conversation had nothing to do with status. It was about time.

With every move Messi makes in MLS, speculation follows. Is this the final chapter? Is he winding down? Cassano’s account suggests the opposite. Messi, now settled in the United States, sounds energised rather than exhausted.

"I can play three or four more years. I do it for the love of soccer, I enjoy it," he told Cassano.

The numbers matter here. Messi’s contract with Inter Miami runs through December 31, 2028. If his own estimate holds, he could still be playing at 41, stretching his stay in the U.S. to its full length – and perhaps even beyond it.

For Inter Miami, that’s not just a marketing coup. It’s the prospect of building a project, a culture, and a league moment around a player who still believes he has years left at a high level.

The Argentina Question That Won’t Go Away

One issue lingers over all of this: Argentina.

His commitment to Inter Miami looks solid. The bigger unknown is how long he will carry the Albiceleste. Argentina are world champions. North America will host the 2026 World Cup. The story writes itself, but the final chapter hasn’t been signed.

Messi has not formally confirmed that he will lead Lionel Scaloni’s side into that tournament. The door, though, remains very much open, and fans expect his name to be the first on the squad list as Argentina aim to defend their crown on foreign soil.

For now, the picture is clear enough. Messi is in Miami, still in love with the ball, still dismissing debates about greatness, and talking calmly about three or four more years at the top.

The clock is ticking on his career, but by his own words, it’s not close to striking midnight yet.
