Newcastle look to Porto for replacement
The Tyneside club have begun sounding out Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt as a potential successor to Guimaraes, according to O Jogo. Newcastle have contacted the Dane’s representatives to explore a move, a deliberate first step after a year in which several high-profile targets have publicly turned them down.
This one will not be straightforward either.
Porto have not yet received a formal offer, and Froholdt is protected by a £73.4 million release clause, a figure that instantly makes negotiations complex. Newcastle are testing the water, trying to gauge whether the 25-year-old would even entertain a switch before they consider triggering serious talks.
So far, the signs from the player are cautious at best.
Fresh from being named Primeira Liga’s Player of the Season, Froholdt has repeatedly stressed his commitment to Porto and to the title fight ahead. “People talk about taking the next step, but for me Porto is already a huge club,” he said recently. “I am focused on the next league match. I like being here. Now we are going all out for the championship.”
Those are not the words of a man agitating for a move. Newcastle know it.
