Arsenal are moving with intent in this summer’s market, and the next major swing looks set to land in the heart of their midfield.
Multiple reports in France claim the club have reached an agreement in principle with Newcastle United for Bruno Guimaraes. The Athletic stops short of confirming that stage has been reached, but its reporting is clear on one point: Arsenal are closing in.
The deal is not done. Not yet. But the direction of travel is obvious.
Arsenal’s three-piece plan
This is not a one-off marquee move. Guimaraes is part of a broader, tightly defined plan.
After wrapping up deals for Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier and Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis, and making Piero Hincapie’s loan a permanent transfer, Arsenal still want three more signings before the window shuts.

The midfield slot has a name on it. If negotiations hold, that name is Bruno Guimaraes.

So while the defensive search stalls, the Guimaraes pursuit gathers speed.

Newcastle sources continue to deny that a sale is agreed. They have pushed back repeatedly, but even on Tyneside there is an acceptance of the underlying reality: Eddie Howe’s recent departure came against a backdrop of financial pressure and the expectation that Guimaraes could be sacrificed.
That doesn’t mean Arsenal have a free run. It does mean the door is open in a way it simply wasn’t a year ago.
Timing matters. Guimaraes is due to report back for pre-season with Newcastle this weekend. Arsenal, who have built their recent success on clarity and early integration, will not want a prolonged saga with their primary midfield target drifting in and out of another club’s preparations.
They will try to move now, before training-ground routines and dressing-room dynamics begin to harden again at St James’ Park.

For all the denials in the North East and the caution in North London, one truth cuts through the noise: of all the moves Arsenal are chasing, Bruno Guimaraes looks the most attainable right now.
