Arsenal Push for Bruno Guimaraes Transfer from Newcastle

After a deliberately quiet start to the window, the London club are pushing hard for one of the most ambitious moves of the summer: prising Bruno Guimaraes away from Newcastle United.

According to The Sun, Arsenal are preparing an official £70 million bid for the Newcastle captain, a figure designed to stretch the Magpies’ resistance to breaking point.
A new midfielder sits at the top of Mikel Arteta’s wish list and Guimaraes is the name underlined in red. Newcastle have taken a hard line and insist they will not sell their leader, but Arsenal’s hierarchy intend to put that stance under direct pressure with a formal offer.
There has already been movement in the shadows. Indirect talks through intermediaries suggested Arsenal were initially weighing up a proposal in the region of £60 million. The London club have now decided that will not be enough, and are ready to go higher in an effort to force a decision.
The same report claims Guimaraes has informed Newcastle officials that he wants the move to the Emirates Stadium. If that position holds, it could accelerate negotiations between the clubs over the coming days and turn a long-running admiration into a full-blown transfer battle.
Quiet start, then a flurry of deals
For weeks, Arsenal’s window felt subdued. That changed quickly.
On Thursday they completed the £34 million signing of Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis, adding direct running and goals from wide areas. The deal followed the permanent £34 million capture of defender Piero Hincapie, who impressed last season while on loan from Bayer Leverkusen. In goal, Illan Meslier arrived on a free transfer to deepen competition in a key position.
One major target slipped through their fingers. Morgan Rogers, highly rated by Arteta and among his preferred attacking options, joined Chelsea instead in a deal worth £117 million. Arsenal’s board refused to go near that figure, and Aston Villa were persuaded to sell to Stamford Bridge rather than the Emirates.
That decision underlined the club’s financial lines in the sand. It did not slow their intent.
Rebuild still in motion
Arsenal’s work is far from done. The Sun reports that the club still want at least three more signings before the window closes: a defender, a midfielder and a forward.
At the back, Ezri Konsa has emerged as a leading candidate. The Aston Villa defender fits the profile for a back line suddenly under strain, with William Saliba facing several months out with a back injury. John Stones is another name in the frame after his contract with Manchester City expired at the end of last month, opening the door to a high-level, Premier League-proven option without a transfer fee.
Up front, Arsenal’s gaze remains fixed on Julian Alvarez. The Argentine forward is admired for his intensity and versatility, but Atletico Madrid are standing firm, both publicly and privately, and insist he is not for sale. That stance may yet be tested if Arsenal clear space and funds with other moves.
Beyond north London, another intriguing attacking piece could soon be on the move. French winger Bradley Barcola may leave Paris Saint-Germain during the current window, with Liverpool currently viewed as the closest to securing his signature.
For Arsenal, though, everything circles back to Guimaraes. Land Newcastle’s captain and the entire shape of Arteta’s midfield – and perhaps the balance of power near the top of the Premier League – starts to look very different. Fail, and the search for that commanding presence at the heart of their team goes on, with the clock already ticking on the summer.
