Arsenal on Alert Over Cristhian Mosquera's Hamstring Injury
Cristhian Mosquera’s hamstring scare has put Arsenal on alert, but Mikel Arteta insists the situation is under control.
The defender limped out of last week’s clash with Aston Villa, sitting down and grabbing the middle of his hamstring before being withdrawn. Arteta initially played it down, explaining after that game: “He is fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something.”
A week later, the concern sharpened. Mosquera was nowhere to be seen in the squad for Sunday’s meeting with Chelsea, his absence opening the door for Ezri Konsa to make his full debut for the club. When a player goes from “fine” to missing a heavyweight league fixture, alarm bells usually ring.
Arteta moved quickly to dampen the noise.
“He had a muscular issue, and we think it’s not too much,” he said after the Chelsea match. “But we need to wait and see the next few days for how it evolves.”
That wait matters. Arsenal travel to face Napoli on Wednesday, and every extra day of assessment pushes Mosquera closer to the doubtful column. A midweek return now looks optimistic at best, with Saturday’s game against Sunderland shaping up as a more realistic target if his recovery goes to plan.
The immediate consolation for Arsenal came in the form of Konsa. Thrown in from the start against Chelsea, the summer arrival delivered a composed, assertive performance, highlighted by a thunderous challenge on former teammate Morgan Rogers that jolted the crowd to life. It was the kind of tackle that announces a defender to a new fanbase.
Konsa is only just back from his holidays and still building full match sharpness, so Arteta will be wary of asking too much, too soon. But if the medical staff clear him to go again in Naples, his display against Chelsea left little doubt about his readiness with the ball and without it.
Arsenal now walk a familiar tightrope: protect a key defender in Mosquera, lean on a new one in Konsa, and hope the schedule doesn’t punish them before the treatment room can empty.
