Arsenal Dominates Manchester City in Community Shield

Arsenal have picked up exactly where they left off.

Mikel Arteta’s side brushed aside Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday, delivering a statement performance and collecting the club’s 18th title in the curtain-raiser.

Arsenal blitz City in Cardiff

The tone was set almost immediately. Inside the first minute, Riccardo Calafiori arrived in the box to meet Myles Lewis-Skelly’s low ball across goal and swept it home. One pass, one finish, and Arsenal were in front before City had settled.

The early goal rattled Enzo Maresca’s team. In his first competitive game in charge of City, the new manager watched his side struggle to deal with Arsenal’s aggression and tempo.

Arsenal sensed vulnerability and kept pushing. Kai Havertz, growing in influence as the half wore on, doubled the lead before the break to tighten the grip on the game and underline the gulf in sharpness.

Any hopes of a City response after half-time were quickly extinguished. Three minutes into the second half, Martin Odegaard, later named player of the match, glided past Josko Gvardiol and then Gianluigi Donnarumma before adding a composed third. It was the flourish of a captain who looks ready to drive another title challenge.

By the final whistle, Arsenal’s dominance left Maresca facing a harsh introduction to life in the City dugout.

Focus shifts to Premier League – and the recruitment room

The win in Cardiff now gives way to the real business. Arsenal open their Premier League campaign at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night against newly promoted Coventry City, with expectations already surging after such a commanding display.

But while Arteta fine-tunes his starting XI on the training pitch, the club’s hierarchy are busy on another front.

Behind the scenes, Arsenal’s recruitment machine is still whirring. According to Sky reporter Patrick Berger, the club have registered their interest in Borussia Dortmund’s chief scout, Sebastian Krug, and have already made initial contact over a potential move.

Krug is not a minor figure in Dortmund’s setup. He has spent close to a decade at the Bundesliga club and has been central to some of their most profitable transfer stories. He played a key role in identifying and bringing in Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland, two signings that later generated huge fees and helped define Dortmund’s recent era in the market.

Sky Germany reports that talks between Arsenal and Krug have already taken place in London. Arsenal are not alone in their pursuit either, with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United also understood to have shown interest in the Dortmund scout.

Krug has held the chief scout title at Dortmund since 2022 and, since November 2024, has shared the role with Laurent Busser. His current contract runs until 2028, a detail that underlines how difficult and potentially costly any move could be.

If Arsenal decide to push ahead, Krug’s arrival would represent another heavyweight addition to a recruitment department that has already helped reshape the first-team squad over the summer.

For that to happen, though, Arsenal and Dortmund would still need to find an agreement. With four years left on Krug’s deal, this would not be a simple raid – it would be a test of how far Arsenal are willing to go to keep their rebuild one step ahead of their rivals.
