Arsenal Eye PSG’s Pacho Amid Wage Challenges
Arsenal might be stacked in defence on paper, but the transfer radar at London Colney hasn’t stopped sweeping. William Pacho, freshly renewed at Paris Saint-Germain, is the latest name circling around the Emirates.
Reports from South America claim the Ecuador international “still has a market” and has now landed on the lists of both Arsenal and Manchester City. Despite penning a new deal at the Parc des Princes, Pacho could be tempted away — for the right money.
Arsenal’s reshaped defence… and another target?
Mikel Arteta spent the summer window tightening his back line again. Illan Meslier arrived on a free from Leeds, Piero Hincapie cost £34.5m from Bayer Leverkusen, Christos Tzolis came in for £34.12m from Club Brugge, Bruno Guimaraes joined from Newcastle for £75m, and Ezri Konsa signed from Aston Villa for £51m.
It was a window built on select upgrades rather than sheer volume. Arteta and new sporting director Andrea Berta also explored an attacking addition, chasing Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez. When the numbers got silly, they walked away and backed what they had.
Defensively, Arsenal look loaded. Hincapie and Konsa join a unit already boasting William Saliba, Cristhian Mosquera, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly. On the face of it, centre-back is not an obvious priority.
Yet Pacho remains on the agenda.
The Pacho equation: salary, status and City pressure
Bolavip reports that Arsenal are “open to making a move” for the PSG centre-back, with both the Gunners and Manchester City ready to put a “very lucrative salary” on the table to lure him from Paris, where he currently earns around €11m a year.
That figure is the crux of the issue. Any Arsenal proposal would have to beat his PSG wage to stand a chance. For City, the numbers “wouldn’t be a problem”. For Arsenal, it is more delicate.
Bolavip underlines the tension: Arsenal have the money, but they “don’t usually pay these kinds of figures” to defenders. Saliba is their top-earning defender on €14m per year, and only five players in the entire squad make more than €11m.
So the question is clear: how badly do Arsenal want Pacho, and are they willing to bend a wage structure that has been carefully constructed over the last few years?
Carragher and Wright question missed Barcola swoop
While Arsenal weigh up a possible move for another defender, some big voices in the English game are still baffled by what they didn’t do in attack.
Jamie Carragher admitted he was stunned Arsenal never truly went for Bradley Barcola before the PSG winger completed his move to Liverpool.
Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher said: “I’m happy it didn’t happen but I was looking at the Barcola thing.
“For me with Arsenal, left wing has always felt like where the drop is compared to [Bukayo] Saka, [Martin] Odegaard, [Kai] Havertz.
The new kid [Christos] Tzolis has made a decent start. But the longer the Barcola thing went on, and then Arsenal didn’t get Vinicius Jr or Alvarez, I was thinking is that [signing Barcola] not the one?”
Ian Wright agreed without hesitation.
“That is the player Arsenal need to sign,” the former Gunners striker said. “He comes in from a brilliant PSG side and he’s played with players who are on that level. Now he’s coming into a Liverpool side where he is that superstar and will bring them [his teammates] up there.
“That’s what we needed. Whether you think Morgan Rogers could have done that, I would have been happy with that. But Barcola was available.”
So Arsenal find themselves in a familiar place: praised for their structure, questioned for their ambition at the very top end of the market. If Pacho becomes the next test of how far they are willing to stretch, will they finally push past their own ceiling — or stick to the rules that rebuilt them?
