Arsenal's Financial Discipline Amid Pedro Neto Links
Jeremie Aliadiere has warned that Arsenal cannot afford to lose their financial discipline as talk grows of a big-money move for Chelsea winger Pedro Neto.
The former Gunners forward, speaking to Metro via Football Betting, pointed to the scale of recent spending and urged caution at a time when Arsenal are being linked with another marquee attacking signing.
“I just think: Yes, we're champions, yes, we've made a lot of money. But at some point, you've got to balance the books as well,” Aliadiere said, highlighting the strain of consecutive heavy windows.
He referenced the outlay that followed Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival and last season’s transfer push, noting that Leandro Trossard has been the only meaningful sale to bring in a fee. That, he argued, leaves the club walking a tightrope between ambition and sustainability.
“When you think about the money that Arsenal already spent after [Bruno] Guimaraes' arrival, what we've spent last year, plus we've only had Trossard leaving for money. Only the club will know financially where they are, but will they be able to go and spend 150 million on a new winger, or is it maybe financially more reasonable to go for a lower option?”
That “lower option” might still be a very high-level player. Aliadiere singled out Neto as a potential solution who fits the Premier League profile without necessarily demanding a record-breaking fee.
“Pedro Neto could be a great option. He's played in the Premier League for many years, is established, knows the league, a very, very good player,” he said. “And don't forget, we've already signed a left winger with Christos Tzolis. He's a left winger, so you're just adding top talent.”
That signing of Tzolis is central to Aliadiere’s argument. Arsenal have already committed around £40 million on the wide man, and he believes that sort of investment has to shape what comes next.
“We've spent 40million. You can't just spend 40 million and then just stick him on the bench and never play him. So I think you've got to keep every option open and see what is best financially for the club.”
While Arsenal weigh their options, Neto’s situation at Chelsea is becoming one of the window’s more intriguing subplots. Since arriving from Wolves in August 2024, the winger has scored 19 goals in 103 appearances, a solid return that has now attracted the attention of Enzo Maresca’s City.
Chelsea, though, are under no pressure to cash in. The club have no immediate desire to sell a player who has grown into a reliable attacking outlet. The problem lies elsewhere: a senior squad swollen to 41 players, a number that makes any semblance of balance almost impossible.
Xabi Alonso has already accepted that trimming is inevitable.
“I'm sure that from today to the last day of the transfer window there will be a lot of links, a lot of rumours, so to be commenting on all of them, it's going to be a hard task,” the Chelsea manager admitted. “But for sure, we need proper balance in terms of qualities, in terms of positions, in terms of balance. We want to have a complete squad and we want to make a good team.”
That is the market Arsenal are walking into: a Chelsea side that needs to sell but not necessarily Neto, a City manager keen to pounce, and a title-winning club in north London wrestling with the cost of staying at the top.
The question now is whether Arsenal’s next big swing comes with a £150 million price tag, or whether prudence wins the day in a window already brimming with risk.
