Arsenal's Midfield Pursuit: Guimaraes or Scott?

Arsenal’s midfield hunt is turning into a test of stubbornness on all sides.

Mikel Arteta wants Bruno Guimaraes. Arsenal have made that perfectly clear. Newcastle, just as firmly, do not want to sell.

Two informal offers – £55m and £65m – have already been brushed aside at St James’ Park. Not debated. Dismissed. Newcastle see their captain as a £90m-£100m footballer, a cornerstone of their project, not a cash-out opportunity.

Arsenal, undeterred, are now preparing to put something more serious on the table: a formal £70m bid, lodged through the proper channels rather than floated through intermediaries. It is a statement number, the kind of fee that usually opens conversations.

This time, it is expected to do nothing of the sort.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano and Newcastle reporter Lee Ryder both indicate the answer will again be a hard no. Inside the club, the message has been even more blunt. Sources spoken to by TEAMtalk described Arsenal’s looming offer as “not welcome, not wanted and will not be accepted.”

That is about as cold as it gets in a summer window.

So Arsenal face a familiar fork in the road. Keep banging on a locked door, or move on before the season closes in and the squad remains one piece short in midfield.

Inside the Emirates, the contingency plan is already drawn up. If Newcastle hold the line on Guimaraes, Arsenal intend to turn towards Alex Scott of Bournemouth.

Scott, 22, is not a late addition to the shortlist. According to CaughtOffside, it has been “decided” that he is the next man up should the Guimaraes pursuit finally collapse. Guimaraes remains the priority, and personal terms with the Brazilian are already understood to be agreed, but Scott has been elevated to first reserve – and that is not a token position.

Arsenal have already tested Bournemouth’s resolve once this summer and were knocked back. Scott has since refused to sign a new deal on the south coast, a move that often signals the beginning of the end for a player at a club of Bournemouth’s size.

Bournemouth are treating it differently. With a first-ever European campaign on the horizon, they are adamant he will not be sold.

That hasn’t stopped the queue forming.

Chelsea have already tried to blow the door off its hinges. Earlier this week, Ben Jacobs revealed that a £64m bid from Stamford Bridge for Scott was rejected. No negotiation, no compromise. Just a firm refusal from a club that believes it can keep its young star for at least one more season.

Chelsea’s interest in another midfielder, Jacobs added, does not automatically push Enzo Fernandez towards the exit. The London club remain open to Fernandez signing a new contract, but a sale is not off the table if their £120m valuation is met.

Those numbers frame the scale of the challenge for Arsenal. If £64m from Chelsea could not tempt Bournemouth, any late pivot from Guimaraes to Scott will demand something significantly higher from the Emirates hierarchy.

Arteta wants his midfield rebuilt with a commanding presence at its heart. The club have identified two of the most coveted in the Premier League to do it. One is chained to Newcastle’s ambition. The other is locked behind Bournemouth’s refusal to cash in before Europe.

Arsenal can keep pushing on Guimaraes, or they can swing hard for Scott. Either way, the next bid will have to be as bold as their intentions.
