Arsenal's Pursuit of Victor Osimhen Intensifies
Arsenal are weighing up a blockbuster move for Victor Osimhen as Mikel Arteta’s search for a new No.9 accelerates in the final weeks of the window – a pursuit that, if it comes off, would send shockwaves through the Premier League title race.
Arteta’s need for a centre-forward has been clear for months. Gabriel Jesus is edging closer to the Emirates exit, his future increasingly framed in the past tense, and Arsenal’s recruitment team are pushing hard for a striker who can turn dominance into trophies on a regular basis.
Viktor Gyökeres offered glimpses last season that he could be that man, hitting 21 goals in 55 appearances across all competitions during Arsenal’s title-winning campaign. His work rate, movement and physicality all fit the Arteta blueprint. But Arsenal want more. They want a guarantee of goals at the very highest level.
Osimhen has now stormed into that conversation.
Osimhen talks emerge as Alvarez pursuit stalls
Arsenal have long been flirting with the idea of prising Julián Álvarez away from Atletico Madrid, viewing the Argentine as a flexible, elite forward who could dovetail with their existing attack. Atletico, though, are refusing to blink. They have already rejected interest from Real Madrid and turned down a €100m (£86.7m) offer from Barcelona, and there is no indication they are softening their stance.
So Arsenal have turned to a different kind of solution: a pure, ruthless No.9.
According to The Telegraph, the club have held discussions over signing Osimhen from Galatasaray, with the Nigerian frontman brought up during wider talks between the two clubs that also involve Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri.
Osimhen’s name is not new to Premier League recruitment meetings. Two years ago, Chelsea held advanced talks to sign him from Napoli, only for the deal to collapse. Instead, the striker made a surprise switch to Galatasaray, initially on loan before the Turkish champions made the move permanent last summer for €75m (£64.8m).
Since then, he has been devastating.
Osimhen has fired Galatasaray to back-to-back league titles, scoring 59 goals in 74 games and bullying defences in a way that makes scouts and sporting directors sit up. Across his club career, he has racked up 173 goals in 297 appearances – numbers that scream reliability at the top end of the pitch.
Now, with Arsenal circling again, the timing feels very different.
Galatasaray’s interest opens the door
The potential deal is not just about Osimhen. It is about leverage.
Galatasaray are pushing hard for Gabriel Martinelli, having already lodged a €45m (£38.4m) bid for the Brazilian. The winger is admired in Istanbul, but any agreement is complicated by reports that Martinelli is not particularly enthusiastic about a move to the Turkish league.
Arsenal have also put Ethan Nwaneri on the table. The 19-year-old, fresh from an impressive loan spell at Marseille, has reportedly been offered to Galatasaray for €40m (£34.1m), with negotiations between the clubs said to be progressing.
That web of interest gives Arsenal room to manoeuvre. Where Atletico have slammed the door on Álvarez, Galatasaray might be more open to business if it means landing two prized attacking talents in return.
From Arsenal’s perspective, Osimhen over Álvarez carries a certain logic. Álvarez offers versatility and creativity, but Osimhen brings a more direct promise: penalty-box dominance, aerial threat, and a track record of carrying title-chasing sides on his shoulders.
A second chance Arsenal may not ignore
The twist in all this is that Arsenal could have had Osimhen earlier.
The Nigerian was offered to the club two years ago, but the hierarchy at the Emirates walked away, wary that Napoli would demand too high a fee. That caution now looks expensive, with Osimhen’s value and reputation soaring after his exploits in Turkey.
This time, the mood is different. The report claims Osimhen is open to a move to north London, and the idea of leading the line for a side that has just reclaimed the Premier League title is a powerful draw.
For Arsenal, the stakes are obvious. Land Osimhen and they add a proven, prolific No.9 to a squad already stacked with technical quality and tactical cohesion. Miss out again, and they risk entering another season still searching for the final piece of Arteta’s attacking puzzle.
