Arsenal's Rotation Gamble Ahead of Napoli Clash
Mikel Arteta walks into Naples with a familiar dilemma. New Champions League campaign, same tightrope: protect legs now or lean on the core that carried Arsenal so close last season.
They were almost flawless a year ago. Eight wins from eight in the league phase, unbeaten in 90 minutes throughout the competition, and still no trophy to show for it after the penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest. That near-miss has reset expectations. Respectable runs mean nothing anymore. This group is judged on whether it finishes the job.
Now comes Napoli away, under the lights at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, on Wednesday at 8pm BST. No glamour mismatch, no gentle easing-in. Just a serious opponent in a serious stadium. Arteta has to get the balance right.
Midfield reshuffle on the cards
The temptation to freshen things up is real. Arsenal have the depth to rotate without tearing out the spine, and the midfield is where that flexibility bites hardest.
Bruno Guimaraes missed the Chelsea game with a knock, and that opens the door for Martin Zubimendi. The Spaniard looks the natural replacement, a like-for-like pivot who can slide in next to Declan Rice without disrupting the structure.
Rice should anchor the base again, the constant in front of the defence. Martin Odegaard, as ever, is expected to operate further forward, stitching moves together and setting the press. That triangle has become Arsenal’s control room; the question is simply who fills the third chair alongside Rice and Odegaard if Guimaraes is not ready.
Out wide, the left flank is bristling with intrigue. Eberechi Eze is pushing hard for a start. His ability to glide past pressure and create in tight spaces gives Arteta a different flavour in those half-spaces, especially in an away tie where ball retention matters.
Through the middle, the call is even more delicate. Viktor Gyokeres is in line for his first start of the season if Arsenal decide to manage Kai Havertz’s minutes. That would be a calculated move rather than a statement dropping. Havertz has carried a heavy workload; Gyokeres brings direct running, aggression and penalty-box presence. With a long season ahead, this is the sort of night where rotation can protect the bigger picture.
Arsenal don’t need revolution. They need freshness.
Defensive injuries narrow Arteta’s hand
At the back, choice gives way to necessity.
William Saliba is out with a back injury. Jurrien Timber still hasn’t kicked a ball this season. Cristhian Mosquera remains a doubt with a muscle problem. That cluster of absences strips away some of the usual flexibility and leaves Arteta with a more rigid defensive puzzle.
Ezri Konsa is therefore expected to continue alongside Gabriel in central defence after starting in the win over Chelsea. It’s a pairing built more on availability than long-term planning, but Konsa’s calm on the ball and recovery pace offer enough reassurance for a hostile away night.
Left-back is another potential flashpoint. Riccardo Calafiori has started the season impressively, yet his injury history looms over every selection call. Arsenal are unlikely to gamble unnecessarily with his fitness this early in the campaign. With Piero Hincapie the only defender named on the bench against Chelsea, the Ecuadorian looks a credible candidate to come into the side and start on the left.
On the right, Ben White’s presence offers stability and familiarity. Behind them, David Raya is set to continue in goal, the preferred option for Arteta’s build-up patterns and high starting position.
The injuries have trimmed the options, but not the ambition.
