Arsenal Secure Defender Ezri Konsa for £50m

Arsenal have finally landed the defender Mikel Arteta wanted – and paid a premium to do it.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa is on his way to the Emirates in a deal worth £50m plus add-ons, with the England international set to undergo a medical within the next 48 hours before signing a long-term contract.

The Athletic report the guaranteed fee is £51m, with performance-related bonuses on top, but both outlets agree on the key point: Arsenal have their man.

Arsenal move decisively for Konsa

Arteta has spent the last week pushing hard for a versatile defender after injuries to William Saliba (back) and Jurrien Timber (groin) left his back line exposed. The brief was clear: someone who can operate at centre-back and cover at right-back, already proven at the highest level.

Konsa ticks every box.

The 28-year-old has been Aston Villa’s standout defender for several seasons, anchoring Unai Emery’s high line and helping drive the club into the Champions League places. His form earned him a place in England’s World Cup squad, where he impressed with his composure and athleticism on the biggest stage.

Arsenal, firmly in win-now mode, have paid accordingly.

A busy summer, and a clear message

Konsa becomes Arsenal’s fifth first-team arrival of the window, joining a squad that has already been reshaped in key areas.

  • Illan Meslier has arrived to back up in goal.
  • Piero Hincapie’s loan has been made permanent, adding another left-sided defensive option.
  • Bruno Guimaraes has been brought in to stiffen and elevate the midfield.
  • Christos Tzolis has come in on the left wing as Leandro Trossard’s replacement.

And Arsenal are not done yet.

Another high-profile left winger is on the agenda. If that signing lands, Gabriel Martinelli will be allowed to leave. A more ruthless centre-forward also remains a priority as the club look to turn near-misses into major trophies.

For now, though, the immediate problem was at the back. Konsa solves it.

Konsa was the top target – but not the first attempt

Romano has described Konsa as Arsenal’s “top target all summer”, yet the path to the deal was not entirely straightforward.

On his YouTube channel, he revealed that Arsenal first tested the waters in Spain. The club made a move for Marc Pubill at Atletico Madrid in recent weeks, exploring whether the 21-year-old could be prised away.

Atleti shut the door.

According to Romano, the Spanish side had “no intention at all to negotiate or discuss,” making it clear Pubill would be staying put. With that avenue closed, Arsenal turned fully towards Konsa and accelerated talks with Aston Villa.

Once the London club committed, the deal moved quickly. Fee agreed. Contract in place. Medical booked.

Konsa will now walk into a dressing room that expects to challenge on every front. The question is no longer whether Arsenal are serious. It’s whether this level of investment, and a defender of Konsa’s calibre, is enough to finally push them over the line.
