Arsenal Close to Signing Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle
Arsenal are closing in on one of the headline moves of the summer, with Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimarães on the brink of a switch to the Emirates in a deal worth up to €90 million plus bonuses, according to L’Equipe.
The London club had already seen offers of €70m and €80m rebuffed by Newcastle, who dug in over the future of their talismanic Brazilian. Arsenal simply came back harder. Their latest proposal — a €90m base fee, topped up by performance-related add-ons — has finally brought the negotiations to the decisive stage.
A long courtship reaches its endgame
Guimarães, 28, has had his heart set on North London for weeks. Personal terms are already agreed on a long-term contract running until 2031, a commitment that underlines just how central Mikel Arteta views him to Arsenal’s next phase.
This is not a late change of heart. The Brazil international has been pushing for the move for over a month, eager to anchor Arteta’s midfield and return to the Champions League spotlight. Arsenal can offer that stage; Newcastle, this season, cannot.
The player has been open with the club hierarchy and with former manager Eddie Howe about his intentions. He informed them of his desire to leave St James’ Park specifically to play Champions League football, making clear that, at this point in his career, he wants a new challenge at the very top level.
Travel plans tell the story
The urgency of the deal has seeped into Newcastle’s pre-season planning. According to talkSPORT, Guimarães asked the club to delay his departure for their training camp in La Manga so the transfer could be finalised.
Newcastle insist his schedule was always flexible after his World Cup commitments. Even so, sources close to the player confirm his travel plans were indeed shifted to help push the move over the line. The message is unmistakable: he wants this done, and he wants it done now.
Once the final details on bonus structures and agent fees are tied up, Arsenal expect to complete the signing within days. A medical will follow, then Guimarães will link up with his new team-mates at the Emirates Stadium.
Newcastle’s summer unraveling
For Newcastle, this is another brutal blow in a summer that already feels like a reset rather than a refinement.
Guimarães is not leaving in isolation. The club have sanctioned Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham Hotspur and Anthony Gordon’s switch to Barcelona, stripping out two more pillars of their recent resurgence. On top of that, Howe has stepped down, removing the architect of their revival from the touchline.
The result is a squad suddenly short of leaders, short of continuity, and short of proven Premier League quality in key areas. Losing their Brazilian captain only deepens the sense of upheaval.
Newcastle did at least see this one coming. They moved earlier in the window to bring in Aladji Bamba from Monaco, a signing clearly made with Guimarães’ likely exit in mind. Bamba will now be asked to grow quickly into a role that, until now, has belonged to one of the league’s most influential midfielders.

Guimarães’ former side inserted a 20 per cent sell-on clause when they sold him to Newcastle. That decision is about to pay off handsomely. A fee at €90m guarantees the French club more than €8m from the deal, a significant windfall for a side carefully tracking every line of the negotiations.
