Arsenal Secures Brazil Midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle

Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, have finalized the acquisition of Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes. The deal, announced on Saturday, reportedly cost £75 million ($101.2 million).

The Brazilian midfielder, who spent four and a half seasons with Newcastle, has agreed to a long-term contract with the Gunners. Arsenal celebrated ending a 22-year wait for an English top-flight league title last season, and Guimaraes stands as their biggest signing this transfer window so far, joining new teammates Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis at Emirates Stadium.

Strengthening Arsenal’s Midfield

Arsenal's sporting director Andrea Berta highlighted Guimaraes' versatility: "He can operate as a defensive midfielder or box-to-box player. He blends quality with stamina and has consistently contributed goals and assists every year." Berta believes Guimaraes will help manager Mikel Arteta refine the team's style and boost internal competition, which is key for pursuing major trophies.

Though the transfer fee was officially undisclosed, Newcastle noted it ranks among the top 10 highest fees ever received for a player aged 28 or over.

Guimaraes’ Journey and Impact

Guimaraes had been linked with Arsenal before, in January 2022, when he moved from Lyon to Newcastle. Now, at 28 years old, he joins Arteta in north London after scoring 31 goals across 195 appearances for the Magpies.

Under coach Eddie Howe, Guimaraes played a key role in Newcastle’s 2023 League Cup victory, ending a 54-year major trophy drought. Guimaraes reflected on his time at Newcastle: "This is one of the toughest decisions of my life. When I arrived, the club was facing challenges, and I am incredibly proud of what we achieved together. I truly fell in love with this place." Howe resigned last week, replaced by German Matthias Jaissle.

Looking Ahead to the New Season

Guimaraes, a recent World Cup participant with Brazil, will compete for midfield spots against Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino at Arsenal.
