Arsenal Targeting Brighton's Jack Hinshelwood as Key Midfield Addition
Arsenal have already twisted the knife on the Premier League by strengthening a title-winning squad. Now they’re circling one of Brighton’s brightest academy products.
According to a report from The Sun, the champions are out in front of Manchester United and Manchester City in the chase for Jack Hinshelwood, with Mikel Arteta said to view the 21-year-old as a “top priority” and a “perfect addition”.
Arsenal’s next big midfield project?
Hinshelwood is officially a defensive midfielder, but Brighton have used him all over the middle and into the final third. That versatility has turned heads. So did his end product: four goals and four assists in the Premier League last season, a strong return for a player still learning the division.
Brighton, as ever, hold the cards. The report claims the Seagulls would rather keep their academy graduate, who has three years left on his contract, but a bid in the region of £43m to £51m could force a serious conversation. With that contract length, Brighton are in a strong negotiating position and will know exactly what a bidding war between Arsenal, United and City could do to the price.
Hinshelwood, the son of former Brighton player Adam Hinshelwood, fits a clear pattern in Arsenal’s recruitment: young, tactically flexible, technically secure, and with the engine to survive Arteta’s demands.
Champions still hunting
Arsenal have not stood still since ending their 22-year wait for a league title. Bruno Guimaraes has arrived to elevate the midfield. Christos Tzolis adds another wide threat. Piero Hincapie strengthens the back line, and Illan Meslier comes in to push the goalkeeping department.
Even after that, the shopping list is not complete. Arsenal still want a centre-back and another attacking option out wide or up front. Hinshelwood, with his ability to play deeper or higher, would blur the lines between those categories and give Arteta more room to experiment with his structure.
Centre-back search hits resistance
At the back, Ezri Konsa remains the headline target. One report on Friday went as far as to claim the Aston Villa defender was “99% done” as an Arsenal signing. That, though, looks exaggerated.
Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano said in his latest YouTube update on Saturday that Konsa is still only on Arsenal’s shortlist, described as a player who is “very appreciated” at the club, rather than a deal on the verge of completion.
Arsenal have explored alternatives, but doors are already being slammed shut. Romano has ruled out moves for Atletico Madrid’s Marc Pubill and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah.
On Pubill, Romano was clear: “The player is not for sale. Atletico Madrid have no intention to sell.” Leverkusen’s stance on Quansah is just as firm. “Arsenal made official contact with Bayer Leverkusen… The answer from Leverkusen is that they don’t want to sell the player. So they rejected the approach,” Romano said.
So Arsenal push on. A title to defend, a squad to refine, and a transfer race to win for a 21-year-old who could be the next piece in Arteta’s evolving machine.
