The window is only just finding its stride, but Arsenal have already planted a flag.
A deal worth around £80million is understood to be in place for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, with a medical pencilled in for next week. It is the sort of move that does more than strengthen a midfield. It sends a message.
Mikel Arteta, preparing for Arsenal’s first Premier League title defence in more than 20 years, is not content to stand still. Guimaraes, the heartbeat of Newcastle’s revival, is being lined up as the next pillar of a squad built to stay at the top.
And that is only half the story.
Arsenal go ‘all in’ on Vinicius
Arsenal have also pushed to the front of the queue for Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian has emerged as a key attacking target as Arteta looks to sharpen a forward line that already carried the club to the summit.
These are described as “crucial days” in the chase. An agreement on personal terms is said to be in place, but the move hinges on a fraught contract stand-off with Real Madrid.
Vinicius is entering the final 12 months of his current deal. Talks over an extension have stalled. Madrid’s offer, reported at around €20m (£17.1m) per season, has been rejected by the player’s camp; their counter-proposal went back the other way, also turned down.
Now comes the ultimatum. According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Madrid have presented Vinicius with three stark options: sign a new contract now, walk away on a free transfer in 2027, or join Arsenal this summer.
Arsenal, for their part, are described as “all in”. For a club that once watched Europe’s elite spirit away their best players, it is a remarkable role reversal.
Manchester United circle Lewis Hall
While Arsenal move to raid Newcastle’s captain, Manchester United are ready to deepen the pain on Tyneside.
United are preparing a swoop for Lewis Hall, the highly rated left-sided defender who joined Newcastle from Chelsea. With Marcus Rashford readying his own return to the fold, United are also tracking Nottingham Forest forward Igor Thiago as they look to refresh their attacking options.
Newcastle, already facing the loss of Guimaraes and dealing with the shock of Eddie Howe’s departure, now find their squad under full-scale assault from traditional heavyweights.
Chelsea reset: Henderson, Welbeck and a forgotten winger returns
Chelsea’s rebuild under their new regime continues at pace and with a distinctly Premier League flavour.
The club are expected to confirm the arrivals of Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck shortly, experienced heads dropped into a young dressing room that has lurched between promise and chaos.

After 20 months on the sidelines, Chelsea and the FA have confirmed he is once more eligible for selection. For a player whose Chelsea career never truly started, this is a rare second chance at a first impression.
Liverpool line up life after Salah
At Anfield, the planning for a post-Mohamed Salah era edges closer to reality.
Liverpool are expected to formalise their interest in Bradley Barcola with a first offer. The French winger has emerged as a serious candidate to become the club’s next big-money wide forward, a potential heir to the role Salah has dominated for years.

In Spain, Barcelona are fighting to keep their squad intact while rivals circle.
Arsenal and Tottenham have joined PSG in the race to sign Ferran Torres, according to Estadio Deportivo. Barça want to renew the Spain international’s contract, but rising interest from England and France is complicating talks.
If Torres pushes to leave, Barcelona are expected to consider offers in the €45m to €50m range. For Premier League clubs seeking a versatile forward comfortable across the front line, that is a tempting price.
Diomande forces Real Madrid’s hand
One player determined to force a move is Yan Diomande.
The RB Leipzig midfielder reported in sick this morning and is not expected to travel with the squad to their training camp. He is also absent from the squad for today’s friendly against SC Verl.
Diomande wants to join Real Madrid and, as reported in Germany, has mentally checked out of Leipzig. Madrid are pushing to reach a final agreement in the coming hours.
Fabrizio Romano adds that the 19-year-old already has an agreement in place with Madrid over a deal worth more than €100m. All that is missing is Leipzig’s green light for him to travel for a medical.
When a teenager is willing to sit out pre-season to force a move, the balance of power in modern transfers could not be clearer.
Howe walks away from Newcastle
Amid all the player movement, one of the most significant departures of the summer comes from the dugout.
Newcastle have confirmed that Eddie Howe has resigned as head coach, ending a near five-year tenure that transformed the club’s fortunes. He delivered Champions League qualification on more than one occasion and, crucially, ended the club’s long wait for major domestic silverware.
The League Cup triumph in March 2025, a 2-1 win over Liverpool, gave Newcastle their first major domestic trophy since 1955. Howe also oversaw two finishes in the Champions League places, returning the club to Europe’s top table for the first time since 2003.

UEFA turns on Infantino
