Arsenal Targets Julián Álvarez: The Role of Viktor Gyökeres

Arsenal’s pursuit of a new centre-forward has taken on a familiar shape: admiration is clear, the need is obvious, but the route to the target is tangled in politics and price. This time the name at the centre of it all is Julián Álvarez – and the key to unlocking him might just be Viktor Gyökeres.

Arteta’s admiration, Álvarez’s ambition

Inside Arsenal, there is no secret about Mikel Arteta’s view. He is a huge admirer of Álvarez, a forward whose work-rate, movement and versatility fit perfectly with the manager’s vision of a relentless, fluid front line. The interest is real.

The problem? Álvarez’s own dream points elsewhere.

The Argentinian wants the next step in his career to take him away from Atlético Madrid, but the destination he has in mind is Barcelona. He wants the Camp Nou stage, the chance to follow the path carved by Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, not a move to north London.

That alone would make any Arsenal pursuit complicated. The stance from Atlético makes it even more so.

Atlético dig in

In the last two weeks, Atlético’s CEO Miguel Ángel Gil has gone on the offensive. Not with a quiet briefing or a line slipped into a press release, but with a full video statement aimed squarely at any club circling Álvarez – Barcelona included.

“My opinion is clear, the club's will is clear, we have made it clear to the player, the agent, the president of Barça…”

Gil said in the video pushed out across Atlético’s channels. He doubled down on the message: Atlético is “the place in the world for Julián” and Álvarez is “the perfect striker” for them.

Then came the numbers. And the point.

“We don't want to transfer him; we won't accept the €100million offer, nor will we accept one for €150million or €200 million (£170million).”

That is not a negotiation stance. It is a wall.

Yet in modern football, walls have a habit of developing cracks.

Where Gyökeres comes in

Despite the ferocity of Gil’s words, there is still a scenario in which an exit could happen – and this is where Viktor Gyökeres enters the frame.

Atlético like the Swedish striker. He ticks the boxes: powerful, direct, aggressive in his running, capable of leading the line in the way Diego Simeone demands. If Álvarez were to leave, Gyökeres would not just be a replacement; he would be a solution.

But this would not be a simple swap. Elite clubs rarely do straight player-for-player trades. The modern game is as much about accounting as it is about tactics.

So any deal would need to be structured in a way that flatters both balance sheets.

The numbers behind the narrative

Picture the framework being discussed.

Say Arsenal are willing to put Gyökeres into the deal and add around £60 million on top to land Álvarez. On the surface, it looks like a part-exchange: one striker plus cash for another.

On the books, it becomes something else entirely.

If Gyökeres is now hypothetically valued at £80 million – up from the £64 million Arsenal paid last summer – Atlético would “buy” him for that £80m figure. For Arsenal, that is logged as a major outgoing transfer and a profit, strengthening their financial position on paper.

At the same time, Arsenal would “buy” Álvarez for £140m. That gives Atlético a huge sale to record, easing their own financial picture and justifying the loss of a player they have publicly insisted is not for sale.

Strip away the accounting language and the football reality is simple: Arsenal give up Gyökeres and £60m, Atlético hand over Álvarez. The structure just makes it palatable for both boards and both sets of auditors.

A deal against the grain

None of this changes the core obstacles. Atlético have gone public with their refusal to sell. Álvarez’s heart is set on Barcelona. Arsenal would need to persuade the player, tempt the club and sacrifice a striker they only signed last summer.

But this is the level Arsenal now operate at. To bridge the final gap in a title race, they are looking at complex, high-stakes moves rather than straightforward cheques.

If they decide Álvarez is the man to transform their attack, Gyökeres could become more than just last year’s big signing. He could be the lever that shifts one of the most immovable transfer stances of the summer – or the price Arsenal pay for chasing a different kind of forward.
