Arsenal Shifts Focus to Esposito and Konsa After Vinicius Jr Deal

Arsenal’s pursuit of attacking firepower has taken a sharp turn. The dream of prising Vinicius Jr away from Real Madrid is over; the Brazilian has inked a new deal at the Bernabeu running until 2032, slamming shut any prospect of a Premier League switch this summer.

So Arsenal move on. They have to. The Premier League champions are deep into pre-season, and Mikel Arteta still wants another forward to spearhead their title defence.

Esposito emerges as £73m focal point

With Vinicius Jr off the table, attention has swung to Italy and to Inter Milan’s highly rated striker Pio Esposito, a player who is starting to attract serious noise across Europe.

According to reports, Arsenal dispatched scouts to watch the 21-year-old in Inter’s pre-season derby against AC Milan, a fixture that offered a close look at how he handles big-game intensity. At 6ft 3in, Esposito brings a physical profile that fits neatly with Arteta’s recent attacking options, adding a different dimension to a department currently led by Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz.

Arteta is understood to be keen to bolster his striking pool now, not later. Arsenal want a forward who can both complement and compete with his existing options, and Esposito’s development in Serie A over recent months has clearly caught the eye.

They are not alone. Manchester United are also tracking the Inter forward, viewing him as a potential long-term solution in attack. But while Arsenal are weighing up a more proactive move, United are said to be taking a more patient stance, not rushing into an offer as they juggle other priorities in the market.

Inter, publicly at least, are digging their heels in. The club have labelled Esposito “untouchable” in an attempt to cool interest from England and beyond. Behind the scenes, though, there is a number: a £73 million valuation that would test their resolve if a bid lands on the table.

The player himself is not forcing anything, but the lure is clear. Sources close to Esposito insist he remains committed to Inter, yet the pull of the Premier League sits firmly in his thoughts. He is open to England. For Arsenal and United, that matters.

Villa brace for Konsa exit as Arsenal circle

While the forward search gathers pace, Arsenal’s defensive plans are also sharpening. Aston Villa are reportedly bracing themselves for the loss of Ezri Konsa, with the Midlands club said to be “resigned to losing” the centre-back if Arsenal return with an improved offer.

Arteta’s interest in Konsa is not new. It dates back to the period after William Saliba suffered a back injury around the World Cup, a blow that exposed just how fragile Arsenal’s defensive depth could become. Those concerns have resurfaced with fresh fitness issues for Ben White and Jurrien Timber, forcing the club to revisit their plans at the back.

At 28, Konsa is viewed as a ready-made, senior option, not a project. Arsenal’s opening bid, though, reportedly came in at just over half of Villa’s £60m valuation, a figure that was never likely to move the needle in Birmingham.

Now the mood at Villa Park is shifting. The Mail reports that Villa are “increasingly concerned” that Konsa will go before the window shuts. Inside the dressing room, there is a similar anxiety: team-mates are said to be worried he is edging towards an exit, especially after Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans have already departed this summer.

Arsenal are not the only club watching the situation. Liverpool, wrestling with defensive problems of their own, could yet step into the race. Virgil van Dijk is back in the fold following the World Cup, but a pre-season injury to Joe Gomez and the continued absence of Jeremy Jacquet from other friendlies have left Andoni Iraola short of reliable options.

So the picture is clear. Arsenal are hunting a striker and a centre-back while their rivals lurk over the same targets. Inter insist Esposito is untouchable, Villa fight to keep Konsa, and yet the Premier League’s biggest clubs keep knocking.

Someone will blink. The only question is who, and how much it will cost.
