Arsenal Active in Transfer Market Ahead of New Season
Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal are “really active” in the transfer market as the Premier League champions look to sharpen a squad already rebuilt with heavyweight summer arrivals.
The title holders kick off their 2026/27 campaign at home to Coventry City tonight, with Frank Lampard bringing his newly promoted side to a restless, expectant Emirates Stadium. Arteta walks into the opener with four major additions already through the door – and a promise that more are coming.
Arsenal still hunting deals before deadline
Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier have all joined the champions in recent weeks, while Ezri Konsa has completed a £51m move from Aston Villa, the England defender finalising his switch to North London with an official announcement imminent.
Yet Arteta is not talking like a manager who considers his business done.
“We are really active in the market, I think I mentioned that a few days ago. The ambition is to improve the squad,” he said at his pre‑match press conference, underlining that Arsenal intend to stay busy right up to the September 1 deadline.
Arsenal are understood to be pushing for another forward, with several existing squad players expected to leave to make room and raise funds. The churn is deliberate. Arteta wants a lean, ruthless group ready to defend their crown.
Defensive injury forces Arteta’s hand
The drive for more signings is not just about luxury. It is also about necessity.
“We have a really specific issue in the backline, especially with the long-term injury of Wilo [Saliba] and the fact that we miss one more defender; that's clear. So we are trying to reinforce that area. Whenever we're ready, we'll announce something.”
A long-term absence for William Saliba strips Arsenal of a cornerstone of their title-winning defence. Konsa’s arrival helps plug that gap, but Arteta’s words point to at least one more reinforcement at the back as the club reacts to a problem that could define their season if left unchecked.
New faces, new edge
If the injury news has complicated pre-season, the new arrivals have done the opposite for the mood inside the camp.
“Yes, that's what the new signings bring: a new energy, something to prove in front of them as well, and obviously a competition,” Arteta said, clearly satisfied with how quickly his recruits have settled.
“And when you talk about players of that quality and leadership, the same with Christos [Tzolis] or with Illan [Meslier], what they've done since day one, I think it lifts the level of everybody.”
Guimaraes brings authority and bite in midfield, Tzolis offers directness and goal threat, Meslier adds presence and competition in goal. Around them, a title-winning core now feels challenged rather than comfortable.
Arsenal start the defence of their crown tonight with new signings on the pitch, more targets in the pipeline and a manager who shows no sign of easing off. The window shuts on September 1. Arteta clearly doesn’t intend to.
