Arsenal's Transfer Window: Crunch Time for Key Signings
Arsenal’s window enters crunch time – with two deals in their sights and the clock ticking.
The market shuts on September 1 and, after a slow-burn summer, the tempo has finally gone up a notch in north London. Arsenal have stayed stubborn on fees, refusing to be dragged into auctions or panic buys. That stance delayed the Bruno Guimaraes deal for months before it was finally wrapped up last week, and it also cost them. Morgan Rogers went elsewhere. Jeremy Monga too. Other clubs moved quicker.
Even so, sporting director Andrea Berta has quietly reshaped Mikel Arteta’s squad for 2026/27. Guimaraes brings control and bite in midfield. Christos Tzolis adds thrust in the final third. Illan Meslier strengthens competition in goal. The squad looks deeper, more robust, better built to absorb the injuries that always arrive once the fixtures pile up.
It still isn’t enough.
Arsenal want at least two more signings: a defender and a forward. Arteta wants a group that can chase trophies on every front. With the Community Shield against Manchester City looming on Sunday, the transfer story is running alongside the first real test of the season.
Osimhen enters the frame as Martinelli closes one door
The search for a marquee forward has already produced a few bruises. Arsenal missed out on Rogers. Vinicius Junior stayed out of reach. Julian Alvarez looks set to do the same. The next name in the frame is Victor Osimhen.
Arteta has admired the Nigerian for a long time. His goals, his movement, his relentlessness. Reports have also linked Osimhen with Spurs, adding a north London edge to the chase.
According to The Telegraph, Berta recently sat down with Galatasaray officials to discuss the Turkish club’s push for Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri. Galatasaray tested Arsenal’s resolve with a £38.4million offer for Martinelli and were knocked back, but the Gunners are open to selling the Brazilian under the right conditions, including the idea of a swap.
In those same talks, Osimhen’s name surfaced as a possible makeweight in the opposite direction, a route that could have turned Galatasaray’s interest into a blockbuster exchange. It is not clear whether Berta floated the idea or whether Galatasaray indicated that the striker could be made available to the Premier League champions.
Then came the twist.
Per The Athletic, Martinelli’s camp have told Arsenal he has no interest in joining Galatasaray. That stance effectively kills off any player-plus-cash package involving him for Osimhen. The door to that particular route is shut, even if Arsenal’s broader pursuit of a top-level forward remains very much alive.
Quansah emerges as defensive solution
At the other end of the pitch, Arsenal’s need is more straightforward: they are short of bodies. William Saliba will miss the opening months of the campaign. Jurrien Timber is also out at right-back. Arteta needs versatility and quality, not just cover.
Enter Jarell Quansah.
Arsenal have registered an interest in the 23-year-old England international, now at Bayer Leverkusen. Various reports describe talks as exploratory, but the profile is exactly what Arsenal are chasing. Quansah can play at centre-back and right-back, offering tactical flexibility and immediate depth in two problem areas.
BBC Sport reports that Liverpool inserted a clause when they sold him to Leverkusen last summer for an initial £30m, giving them the right to match any future bid. For now, Liverpool are said to have no intention of triggering that option, leaving the path clear for others. The Guardian adds that Leverkusen will demand at least £43m before they even consider letting him go.
That interest runs alongside Arsenal’s long-standing admiration for Ezri Konsa. Yet Aston Villa’s £60m valuation has pushed the London club to look elsewhere. Quansah, at a lower fee and with the added benefit of positional flexibility, has become a serious alternative.
Two targets, one window running out fast. Arsenal have already shown patience this summer. Now the question is whether they can show ruthlessness in the final weeks to turn a strong squad into a title-winning one.
