Arsenal Close in on Vincent Joseph from Liverpool
Arsenal are poised to turn one of Liverpool’s favourite recruitment tricks back on the Reds, closing in on highly rated academy striker Vincent Joseph.
For years, Liverpool have raided rival youth systems with ruthless efficiency. Harvey Elliott from Fulham. Ben Doak from Celtic. Trey Nyoni from Leicester. Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea. One after another, some of the most gifted teenagers in Britain have been steered towards Anfield.
This time, the flow is reversing.
Arsenal move for Vincent Joseph
According to The Athletic, Arsenal have reached an agreement with 16-year-old forward Vincent Joseph over a move to north London, with negotiations ongoing between the clubs over a compensation fee.
Because Joseph is under 24 and has not signed a professional deal, any failure to agree a figure will send the case to a tribunal, which would then set the amount owed to Liverpool. It’s the same mechanism that has underpinned several high-profile youth moves in recent years.
Joseph’s departure has been on the cards. The teenager did not sign scholarship terms with Liverpool this summer after his schoolboy registration expired, opening the door for Arsenal to make their move.
A prolific record at youth level
Liverpool’s academy staff will feel this one. So will plenty of supporters who follow the youth ranks closely.
Joseph’s numbers hint at a serious talent. He scored three goals in just two appearances in the Under-18 Premier League last season, a brief but eye-catching contribution. On the international stage, he has eight goals in nine caps for England under-16s, including a hat-trick against the Netherlands under-16s last December, as recorded by Transfermarkt.
Those are the kind of figures that make top clubs pay attention. Arsenal certainly have.
Liverpool, for their part, have been busy tying down other prospects. The club have moved quickly to offer professional terms to talents such as Lucas Clarke. With Joseph, though, the breakthrough never came, and the path now appears to lead towards the Emirates.
Tables turned on Liverpool
There is a certain irony to the situation. Just after Liverpool swooped in to prise Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea shortly after his 16th birthday – with that fee also heading for a tribunal – they now find themselves on the other side of a similar raid.
Arsenal, long criticised in some quarters for not being aggressive enough in the youth market, are acting with the kind of sharpness Liverpool have made their trademark.
For Liverpool, losing a precocious striker to a direct domestic rival will sting, particularly given Joseph’s trajectory at international level. For Arsenal, it looks like another smart bet on a teenager with a high ceiling.
The next question is simple and far more brutal: which club will be the one to turn that promise into a first-team forward?
