Aston Villa Faces Arsenal Bid for Ezri Konsa as Liverpool and Newcastle Seek Defensive Reinforcements
Aston Villa’s battle to hang on to their World Cup darlings is turning into the running story of this window. Now it’s Ezri Konsa back in the crosshairs.
Arsenal, already rebuffed once, are preparing a fresh push for the England defender, according to the Daily Mail. Their first offer was knocked back last month; this time they are expected to come closer to Villa’s stance, with the Midlands club valuing Konsa at a minimum of £60m. Villa know exactly what they have: a homegrown, title-winning centre-back in his prime, and they are pricing him accordingly.
While they fight fires at the back, Villa are also trying to strengthen it. A £14m move for Atlético Madrid’s Italian left-back Matteo Ruggeri is being worked on, a deal that would give Unai Emery another option on the flank if the Konsa saga drags into August.
Liverpool’s defensive rebuild gathers pace
Up on Merseyside, Liverpool’s search for defensive depth has taken them to Madrid. Teamtalk reports that Real Madrid centre-back Raúl Asencio, 23, has been told he can leave the Bernabéu, with intermediaries already sounding out Liverpool over a move.
Asencio is at the age where he needs minutes, and Liverpool need legs. The fit is obvious. Whether it becomes concrete business depends on how hard the Anfield hierarchy push in the coming days.
The recruitment net stretches further forward too. Andoni Iraola has teenage Paris Saint-Germain winger Ibrahim Mbaye on his list. The 18-year-old lit up the World Cup with a spectacular goal for Senegal against France and is believed to be keen on a switch to Anfield. Raw, quick and fearless, he fits the template of a Liverpool wide signing, and the club know the value of getting that type early.
Everton eye Johnston as Celtic brace themselves
Across Stanley Park, Everton are working a different angle. The Scotsman reports that the club like the look of Celtic and Canada full-back Alistair Johnston, and crucially, the feeling is mutual. Johnston is understood to be open to a Premier League move, and conversations have already started at a high level.
David Moyes and Martin O’Neill have, according to the report, already had a “chinwag” about a possible deal. Everton want energy and reliability down the flanks; Johnston has been exactly that in Glasgow and for his country. Celtic, though, are rarely in the mood to sell cheap.
Turkey turns up the volume
In Turkey, the window has turned into a full-blown spectacle. Mohamed Salah’s arrival at Trabzonspor on Wednesday sparked street celebrations, a throwback scene to an era when marquee signings shut down city centres.
Trabzonspor may not be done. The club are exploring a move for Darwin Núñez, with the Uruguayan striker potentially available on a free after a difficult spell at Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League. Over in Istanbul, Fenerbahce are plotting a headline act of their own. They have been linked with a move, likely a loan, for Real Madrid’s Brazilian forward Endrick. Newcastle and Fulham chase midfield steel

The Swede is on Nottingham Forest’s radar as well, so Newcastle may need to move with purpose if they want him as part of their next cycle.
Bergvall offers versatility and technical security in the middle of the pitch, exactly the sort of profile Newcastle have leaned towards under their current regime. The question is whether Spurs are ready to cash in, or simply listening to offers to gauge the market.
In west London, Fulham are targeting Southampton’s Northern Ireland midfielder Shea Charles. Saints value him at £30m, a price that reflects his age, potential and importance in the Championship last season. Fulham, always on the lookout for long-term midfield solutions, must decide if that figure is a stretch or a necessary investment.
Boro raid Manchester United and Spurs
Lower down the pyramid, Middlesbrough are moving with a clarity that some Premier League clubs might envy. They are set to sign goalkeeper Radek Vitek from Manchester United after the clubs agreed a £14m fee, according to Sky Sports.
The 22-year-old Czech spent last season on loan at Bristol City, making 41 appearances, and never featured for United’s first team. That has not stopped the Old Trafford hierarchy inserting a 35% sell-on clause into the deal, a clear sign they do not want to be caught out if Vitek’s development spikes in the Championship and beyond.
Boro are also closing in on Spurs centre-half Ashley Phillips in a £7m deal. Two young defensive signings, both with top-flight pedigrees in their background, underline Middlesbrough’s intent: build a promotion push on a back line that can grow together, then handle the Premier League if and when they get there.
From Konsa’s price tag to Vitek’s sell-on clause, the market is spelling out a blunt truth: defenders, and those who can create them, have never been more valuable.
