Aston Villa's £18m Bid for Harwood-Bellis Rejected Amid Konsa Exit
Aston Villa have seen an opening offer for Taylor Harwood-Bellis turned down, as their summer rebuild starts to bite.
Villa tabled a bid worth around £18m plus add-ons for the Southampton centre-back, but the Championship side rejected the approach. Saints are understood to be holding out for closer to £25m for the 22-year-old, who has become a cornerstone of their defence.
The move comes with Villa braced for a major departure. England defender Ezri Konsa is set to join Arsenal in a deal worth more than £50m, leaving a sizeable hole at the heart of Unai Emery’s back line. Harwood-Bellis has emerged as a leading candidate to fill it.
The defender joined Southampton in 2023, initially on loan, and made the switch permanent after impressing on the south coast. His form earned him a first England cap in 2024, in a Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland, underlining his rise from promising prospect to full international.
Southampton’s stance is firm. They finished fourth in the Championship last season before the Spygate scandal cut short their play-off hopes, and Harwood-Bellis is central to their plans to go again. Losing him would mean cash in the bank, but a major rebuild at the back.
His journey has already taken a few sharp turns. Harwood-Bellis came through the Manchester City academy but never made a first-team appearance, instead building his reputation away from the Etihad and proving he can anchor a defence at senior level.
Villa, fresh from their Europa League triumph in May, are reshaping a squad that has already been stripped of several big names. Youri Tielemans has gone to Manchester United, Morgan Rogers to Chelsea and Lucas Digne to Paris St-Germain, three exits that would have defined most summers on their own.
The uncertainty does not stop there. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez and Premier League-era record scorer Ollie Watkins have both been linked with moves away, casting more shadows over a team that only recently climbed to European glory.
Recruitment has not stood still. This week Villa brought in goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and left-back Matteo Ruggeri, adding fresh legs at both ends of the pitch. Earlier in the window they secured midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves and forward Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, moves that hint at a squad being turned over at speed.
Now comes the hard part: replacing a defensive leader. Villa have made their first move for Harwood-Bellis. Southampton have pushed it back. The question is how far Villa are willing to go to land their man as Konsa heads for the exit.
