Atlético Madrid Accuses Barcelona of Smear Campaign in Álvarez Transfer

Atlético Madrid have gone on the offensive, accusing Barcelona of orchestrating a “smear campaign” and spreading “fake news” around a potential move for Julian Álvarez, in a row that has lit up the early days of the summer window.

Barça, fresh from completing a £69m deal for Antony Gordon, have been heavily linked with a big-money bid for the Argentine striker. Atlético’s response has been blunt: Álvarez is not for sale, and they value the 26-year-old at up to £130m.

That message alone might have been expected. What followed was anything but routine.

Social media turns into a battleground

As speculation swirled on social media about an imminent Barcelona offer, Atlético chose mockery as their weapon of choice. The club’s official channels pushed out parody graphics of Barcelona stars Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha dressed in Atlético shirts, as if they were the ones being poached.

The joke didn’t stop at photos. Each “announcement” came with a spoof bid attached. For Yamal, Atlético claimed they were ready to tempt Barça with a package including Bad Bunny concert tickets, an annual subscription and a bag of sunflower seeds. The message was clear: this is how ridiculous the rumours look from Madrid.

Under a picture of Raphinha in red and white, Atlético added a sharp caption: “Don’t believe everything you see, especially if it’s related to Barca.”

The tone was playful, but the target was serious.

From jokes to hard accusations

Then the club’s posts turned more pointed. In one message, Atlético referenced Barcelona sporting director Deco and a supposed offer for him to join their scouting team in the Brazilian market.

“Finally, we want to take this opportunity to categorically deny that we have made an offer to the sporting director of FC Barcelona to join our scouting team in the Brazilian market,” the statement read, before the punchline: “No, Atlético de Madrid would never do something like that.”

The humour quickly gave way to a direct attack.

“However, in recent months, we’ve been suffering a smear campaign against one of our players. Leaked information with ulterior motives, ‘fake news,’ constant disrespect, the culé version of the propaganda machine inventing little stories, calls before direct matchups.”

This is not the usual coded language of transfer season. Atlético are accusing Barcelona, in plain terms, of trying to unsettle Álvarez and manipulate the narrative around his future.

Barcelona declined to comment when approached by Sky Sports News. The Spanish FA has also been contacted for a response.

A striker in demand, a club drawing a line

The intensity of Atlético’s reaction underlines how highly they rate Álvarez. Twenty goals in 49 games in all competitions this season have cemented his status as a central figure, not a bargaining chip.

With the summer window officially opening on June 15 and closing on September 1, this is only the opening act. Barcelona have already shown their willingness to spend big with the Gordon deal. Atlético have now shown they are ready to fight just as hard to keep their man — on the pitch and in the court of public opinion.

If this is how the saga starts, what will it look like when real bids arrive, or if Álvarez himself is forced into the spotlight?
