Atlético Madrid Opens Talks for Cristian Romero Transfer
Atlético Madrid have moved from admiration to action. According to BBC Sport, the Spanish club have opened formal talks with Tottenham over a summer move for Cristian Romero, the Spurs captain and cornerstone of their defence.
On paper, it looks a strange moment to push for an exit. Romero signed a four-year contract extension in North London only last August, a clear statement at the time that he would anchor Tottenham’s next cycle. Yet the noise around his future has only grown louder, and now there is structure behind the speculation.
Tottenham know exactly where Atlético stand. The Liga side have made their interest clear, and those close to the discussions do not expect personal terms to be a stumbling block. If Spurs agree a fee, the path for Romero to swap North London for Madrid appears relatively clear.
De Zerbi’s Stance Changes the Mood

Romero’s stock at international level remains high. The 28-year-old started all seven matches in Argentina’s run to the World Cup final last month, underlining his status as one of the most combative and influential centre-backs in the game.
His club season told a different story. Spurs slumped to 17th, Romero collected two red cards, and a knee injury ruled him out of the run-in. While he struggled, Micky van de Ven moved in the opposite direction, emerging as a key figure and now closing in on a new five-year deal.

Simeone’s Defensive Fix
For Atlético, Romero represents something very simple: steel. Diego Simeone’s side conceded 44 goals in La Liga last season, a number that grated against the identity he built in the Spanish capital. Signing a World Cup-winning centre-back in his prime would be a direct attempt to restore that old edge.
Romero’s aggression, front-foot defending and leadership fit the Simeone template. The club are preparing for advanced negotiations in the coming weeks, aiming to strike a deal before the new domestic campaign kicks off.
