Balraj Landa Embraces New Challenge in Hong Kong Football

Balraj Landa has traded the fringes of the English game for a leap into the unknown in Hong Kong – and he sounds ready to embrace every bit of it.

Released by AFC Bournemouth in February, the 21-year-old attacking midfielder has signed for Southern ahead of the new Hong Kong Premier League season, completing a sharp change of direction after short spells with non-league sides Salisbury City and Dorchester Town.

The move gathered pace once Zesh Rehman – the former Fulham defender and ex Southern player‑manager – flagged the opportunity. From there, Landa barely hesitated.

“The decision to come was a no-brainer,” he said. “My first thought was, ‘What an opportunity to get’.”

For Landa, it is about more than minutes on the pitch. It is a career gamble wrapped inside a life experience.

“It ticks all the boxes for me: it’s a good platform to show myself in Asia, and to really get my name out there,” he explained. “On the non-football side, it’s a chance to live on the other side of the world, to adapt and to survive by myself.”

That last line lingers. Survive by myself. No academy safety net. No short drive home.

Landa arrives in Hong Kong with a solid grounding. A two-footed, “very technical and creative” attacking midfielder, he was picked up by Southampton at just eight years old, learning his trade in one of England’s most respected youth systems before moving on to Bournemouth.

Now the surroundings will be different, the culture new, the spotlight smaller but more direct. The platform, though, is clear enough: Southern are betting on his talent; Landa is betting on himself.
