Barcelona Agreement for Rodri: A €76.5m Transfer
Barcelona have reached an agreement in principle with Manchester City to sign Rodri in a deal worth around €76.5 million, landing the Spain captain as the centrepiece of Hansi Flick’s evolving midfield.
The two clubs are now exchanging paperwork to close the transfer, with only the final formalities standing between Barcelona and one of the most decorated midfielders of his generation. Rodri, 30, is expected in the city in the coming days and could be unveiled before Wednesday’s Joan Gamper Trophy clash against Al Ahly at Spotify Camp Nou.
City rejected two earlier Barcelona bids before the Catalan club returned over the weekend with a third offer that finally hit the mark. With just one year left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium, City were prepared to cash in at the right price, and Barcelona eventually found it.
Real Madrid also pushed to sign the Spain captain, but once negotiations accelerated, sources indicate Rodri made clear his preference: Barcelona, not the Bernabéu.
Centrepiece of a frantic rebuild
Rodri does not arrive alone. He drops into a squad being aggressively reshaped.
Joao Cancelo is set to rejoin as a free agent, reuniting with the club after his previous loan spell. The fullback and Rodri are poised to become Barcelona’s fourth and fifth signings of the summer, after the arrivals of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Jesse Bisiwu.
The long-term injury to Frenkie de Jong forced Barcelona to rethink their midfield structure. Initially, Rodri was not at the top of their list, but his situation shifted after a landmark year with Spain. Once it became clear he could leave City, Barcelona moved quickly.
The rebuild is not limited to midfield. Barcelona are still hunting a striker. Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez has emerged as the leading target after the exits of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, with Torres now set for Paris Saint-Germain.
As the squad takes shape under Flick, bookmakers have already started to react, installing Barcelona among the favourites for the La Liga title again. The market sees a team being armed for another run at domestic dominance — and Rodri is the headline act.
A serial winner heads for Camp Nou
Rodri’s journey to this point has been relentless.
He came through Villarreal’s academy, matured at Atletico Madrid, then triggered his €70 million release clause to join Manchester City in 2019, a then-club-record fee. From there, he became the beating heart of Pep Guardiola’s midfield.
The honours followed. Four Premier League titles. A Champions League crown. FA Cup and EFL Cup triumphs. He dictated games, set the tempo and anchored one of the most dominant club sides in modern football.
The last two seasons have not been without setbacks. A serious knee injury ruled him out for much of the 2024-25 campaign, and a hamstring issue disrupted the following year. But when it mattered this summer, he returned at full power.
Rodri led Spain to World Cup glory, adding to a European Championship title already on his CV. He was named player of the tournament at both the World Cup and the Euros, and that international dominance helped him claim the Ballon d'Or in 2024.
Barcelona see more than just a holding midfielder. Internally, he is viewed as a statement signing, a player capable of elevating Flick’s back-to-back Spanish champions from strong contenders to something more ruthless, more complete.
If the paperwork goes through as expected, the next time Rodri walks out at Spotify Camp Nou, he will not be in sky blue. He will be the new axis of a Barcelona side determined to stay on top of Spain — and push the ceiling even higher.
