Barcelona Eyeing Alessandro Bastoni as Defensive Solution
Barcelona’s search for a long-term defensive pillar has brought a familiar name back to the top of their list: Alessandro Bastoni.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the Inter Milan centre-back is now open to a move in the next transfer window. He is not agitating for an exit and is said to feel comfortable in Milan, but crucially, he has stopped short of closing the door on a change of scenery.
The next step could be decisive. The 27-year-old reportedly wants to speak directly with Barça coach Hansi Flick to gauge whether a switch to Catalonia would truly fit both his ambitions and the club’s plans. That conversation, if it happens, will tell Barcelona how serious Bastoni is about leaving the Nerazzurri.
A long-standing target back in play
This is not a new obsession in Barcelona’s offices. Bastoni was already one of the club’s leading transfer targets in the summer, when the Blaugrana first tried to prise him away from San Siro. Flick, newly installed at the time, is said to be a firm admirer of the Italian international and backed the idea of building his defence around him.
Reports then suggested that the deal did not collapse over money or strategy, but because Bastoni himself chose to stay in Milan. Loyalty to Inter, comfort in his surroundings, and the promise of a central role under Cristian Chivu kept him where he was.
Now the landscape feels slightly different. Whether his stance has truly shifted remains unclear, but the fact that he is willing to listen, and to talk, has put Barcelona back on alert.
Inter’s clock is ticking
Inter, for their part, are approaching a delicate moment. Bastoni’s contract runs until 30 June 2028, which still looks distant on paper, but the club knows the financial reality: the coming transfer windows are among their last chances to secure a major fee for one of their most valuable assets.
Letting him run his deal down is not an option for a club that lives on sharp sporting and economic decisions. Selling him too early, though, would mean weakening a team that leans heavily on his presence.
And that is the crux. Inter would lose far more than just a squad member. Bastoni is an undisputed starter under Chivu and has already made eleven appearances in all competitions this season. He anchors the back line, dictates the first phase of build-up, and gives Inter a left-footed balance that is hard to replace on the market.
Any green light to negotiate will not come lightly.
Flick’s defensive puzzle at Barcelona
On the other side of the equation, the need is obvious. Barcelona and Flick are scouring the market for a centre-back capable of locking down the position next to Pau Cubarsí for years to come. The club sees the teenager as a central piece of its future, but he needs a partner of equal authority and experience.
Right now, Gerard Martin most often fills that role, doing a job but not entirely closing the debate. Behind him, the depth chart is thin. Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen are both sidelined by injury, stripping Flick of alternatives and exposing just how fragile the current structure can be.
A profile like Bastoni’s – left-footed, comfortable under pressure, tactically disciplined – fits almost perfectly with what Barcelona want to build. That is why his potential openness to a move is being treated in Catalonia as an opportunity that cannot be ignored.
A tug-of-war in the making?
So the stage is set. An Italian international at his peak, a Spanish giant in need of a defensive cornerstone, and a club in Milan weighing sporting stability against financial timing.
Inter must decide how much risk they are willing to take with one of their key men. Barcelona must decide how far they can stretch to land the defender Flick has long admired.
If Bastoni does sit down with Flick in the coming weeks, the outcome of that conversation could shape not just one back line, but the defensive identity of two European heavyweights for seasons to come.
