Barcelona's Urgent Bid for Rodri: 48 Hours to Close the Deal

Barcelona have drawn a hard line in the sand. According to Fichajes, the Catalan giants have given themselves 48 hours to close a deal for Manchester City midfielder Rodri, aiming to unveil the Spain international at the Joan Gamper Trophy.

This is no longer a slow-burn saga. Talks between the clubs have accelerated into a decisive phase, with both sides locked on the key question: how to reach City’s valuation without breaking Barcelona’s fragile financial structure.

City are standing firm. They want a package close to €80 million (£69m) before even thinking about letting one of their midfield pillars leave. Barcelona have already tested that resolve. A bid of €60m plus €10m in add-ons was rejected. A revised offer that could rise to €75m also failed to move the English champions.

So the discussions have shifted from “if” to “how”. The sticking point is the economic architecture of the deal. City want as much of the fee guaranteed as possible. Barcelona are fighting to keep the fixed part down, leaning on bonuses and variables to protect their books.

Two main formulas are now on the table. One: €70m in fixed payments with a smaller add-on package. The other: €65m guaranteed, topped up by €15m in performance-related bonuses. Both structures broadly hit City’s target, but the balance between certainty and risk is where the argument lies.

What tilts the balance slightly towards Barcelona is Rodri himself. The midfielder has made it clear he wants to leave England and that Barcelona is his preferred destination. Interest from Real Madrid has been ruled out, removing the threat of a bidding war and giving Barça extra confidence as they push through the final stretch.

Rodri has already reported back to Manchester for pre-season, having requested a short delay to clarify his future. He is training and building fitness with City, but everyone involved knows his time in Manchester could be nearing its end.

From Barcelona’s perspective, City’s demands feel high. Rodri has just one year left on his contract, a detail the Catalan hierarchy have used as leverage in talks. Yet there is also a hard reality: if they want him now, they will have to meet City’s price in one form or another.

That is where Joan Laporta comes in. The Barcelona president is set to step directly into the negotiations in the coming hours, a clear sign of how seriously the club are treating this deal. Inside the Camp Nou offices, the hope is that Laporta’s intervention can push an agreement over the line by the end of the weekend or, at the latest, Monday.

If the self-imposed 48-hour deadline is met, Rodri is expected to travel to Catalonia almost immediately. Barcelona plan for him to join training on Tuesday and then step into the spotlight at the Joan Gamper Trophy presentation, the traditional curtain-raiser for their season.

Landing such a marquee midfielder would reshape Barcelona’s summer. The final transfer fee and wage package will heavily influence their remaining room under La Liga’s salary cap. Only once Rodri’s numbers are locked in will the club’s sporting department be able to fully turn to the rest of their transfer priorities.

For now, everything circles back to those 48 hours. City’s demands, Barcelona’s limits, and Rodri’s desire to wear blaugrana – all converging on a single weekend that could define the heart of Barça’s midfield for years to come.
