Barcelona Faces Cancelo Transfer Dilemma as Inzaghi Shifts Responsibility
Joao Cancelo’s name needed only one sentence from Simone Inzaghi to roar back into Barcelona’s transfer agenda.
On the eve of Al-Hilal’s league opener against Al-Faisaly, the Italian coach drew a clear line. Cancelo did not make the squad. And Inzaghi made it clear this was no longer his call.
“Cancelo continues to train regularly with the team, but his future and whether he stays or not is a matter for the board of directors,” he told Spanish newspaper Sport.
With that, the situation shifted. The decision on the Portuguese full-back has moved upstairs, away from the pitch and into the hands of Al-Hilal’s hierarchy. For Barcelona, it sounded like an invitation.
Flick’s priority, Cancelo’s wish
Inside the Camp Nou offices, Inzaghi’s words landed like a green light. Hansi Flick has already placed Cancelo at the top of his list to strengthen the full-back positions, valuing his versatility on both flanks and his immediate readiness for elite competition.
The player has done little to hide where he wants to be. On Friday, Cancelo again used Instagram to signal his intentions, posting a new Barcelona-related image on his Stories. It was his second public nod towards the Catalan club since last season ended.
The message from the defender is simple: he wants to go back.
The price hike that stalled the deal
For a while, the numbers looked manageable. Barcelona and Al-Hilal had inched close to an agreement around the 10 million euro mark, a fee that fit the Catalans’ delicate finances and reflected Cancelo’s situation.
Then the bar moved.
Saudi sources indicated Al-Hilal had raised their demands to 15 million euros to let the 32-year-old leave. That jump has put the brakes on negotiations. Barcelona are refusing to be dragged into what they see as an inflated valuation, conscious of every euro they commit this summer.
Al-Hilal, on the other hand, are in no rush. The club are standing firm, prepared to wait until they secure a replacement before opening the exit door for one of their star names.
So the talks cool. The interest does not.
Deco on the clock
The next move belongs to Deco.
Barcelona’s sporting director must now find a way through the deadlock: a structure that trims the fee, perhaps spreads payments, or builds in variables that satisfy Al-Hilal without breaking the Catalans’ budget.
Flick is waiting. Cancelo is pushing. Al-Hilal are holding their line.
The market rarely leaves all three happy.
