Barcelona Sets 48-Hour Deadline to Sign Rodri from Manchester City
Barcelona have drawn a hard line in the sand: 48 hours to close a deal for Manchester City midfielder Rodri or risk watching their marquee target slip away.
According to Fichajes, the Catalan club want everything wrapped up in time to unveil the Spain international at the Joan Gamper Trophy, turning a pre-season showcase into a statement of intent. The clock is already ticking.
Valuation standoff between giants
Talks between Barcelona and City have moved into a decisive phase, with both clubs locked on the same figure but not on how to get there.
City are standing firm on a package close to €80 million (£69m) before they agree to let Rodri leave. Barcelona have already seen multiple offers rejected: an initial €60m plus €10m in add-ons was turned down, and a revised proposal that could have reached €75m also failed to shift the English champions.
The issue is not the headline number. It is how that number is built.
City want as much of the fee guaranteed as possible. Barcelona, operating under tight financial controls and wary of their wage cap, are pushing to keep the fixed outlay down and lean more heavily on variables.
Two compromise models are now on the table. One would see €70m paid in guaranteed instalments with a smaller add-on package. The other drops the fixed fee to €65m but includes up to €15m in performance-related bonuses to reach City’s valuation.
For now, neither version has been fully signed off.
Rodri’s stance tilts the balance
One factor clearly plays in Barcelona’s favour: Rodri himself.
The midfielder has communicated a firm desire to leave England and has made Barcelona his priority destination. Interest from Real Madrid has been completely ruled out, clearing the path and reinforcing the Blaugrana’s belief that they can eventually force a breakthrough.
Rodri has already returned to Manchester to report for pre-season, having been granted a short delay to clarify his future. He is training and working on his fitness with City, but everyone involved knows this could be a brief stopover rather than the start of another season in sky blue.
Barcelona, for their part, consider City’s valuation high for a player with just one year left on his contract. Yet they also recognise a harsh reality: if they want Rodri now, they will have to meet City’s demands in one form or another.
Laporta steps in as deadline looms
With negotiations finely poised, president Joan Laporta is preparing to step directly into the talks. His intervention is expected to shape the final stretch, as Barcelona aim to close an agreement over the weekend or by Monday at the latest to honour their own 48-hour deadline.
If a deal is struck in time, the plan is clear. Rodri would travel to Catalonia shortly after the agreement is finalised, join his new teammates in training on Tuesday, and then be presented to the fans at the Joan Gamper Trophy.
Landing a player of his profile would not just transform Xavi’s midfield options. It would also redraw Barcelona’s financial map for the rest of the window. Once the definitive cost of the operation is locked in, the club’s sporting department will adjust their remaining transfer plans and wage cap strategy around the Rodri deal.
For now, everything hangs on those next 48 hours.
