Barcelona's Defensive Dilemma After Araujo's Departure
Barcelona’s defensive plan for the season has been ripped up and rewritten since Ronald Araujo packed his bags for Liverpool. Now Deco is racing the clock.
The sporting director has zeroed in on a new priority before the window shuts: an experienced, left-footed centre-back who can walk straight into Hansi Flick’s squad and compete from day one. No projects. No long-term bets. Someone ready.

Araujo’s loan to Liverpool has stripped Barcelona of their most dominant defender and shaken the depth chart. Flick is currently left with Pau Cubarsí, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen as his main central options for the 2026/27 campaign.
On paper, that looks like four names. In reality, it looks light for a season that will stretch across La Liga, Europe and domestic cups. Rotation will be limited. Any injury or suspension could expose them.
Alvaro Cortes sits in the background of that picture, but only just. He remains an option for Flick, yet inside the club there is still no firm belief that he is ready to shoulder the pressure of being a regular first-team defender over an entire season.
The doubts go both ways. Cortes does not want to drop back to Barça Atlètic and has offers on the table from elsewhere. A move in the coming days is very much on the cards, which would strip away one more layer of cover and crank up the urgency in Deco’s search.
So the message from the sporting department is clear: Barcelona need experience, not another youngster who might be ready in two years’ time.
Deco’s brief: left-footed, reliable, affordable
Deco has thrown himself into the market with a very narrow brief. Barcelona want a left-footed centre-back who brings experience, offers reliability and fits inside the club’s financial restrictions.
That tight profile has already ruled out several names they admire.
Luka Vuskovic, for instance, was on Barcelona’s radar before he completed his move to Brighton. The club liked his potential, but at 19 he was judged too young for what Deco is looking for right now. The same logic applies to Jon Martin of Real Sociedad: highly rated, but still at an age where he would be another development piece rather than an instant pillar.
Even Cristian Romero, with his proven quality and top-level experience, did not tick every box for Barcelona’s current needs. The club are not simply chasing the biggest name or the most talented defender available. They are chasing a very specific fit.
Deco wants someone who can arrive, plug straight into Flick’s system and raise the level of competition in the heart of defence. Not a stopgap. Not a prospect. A solution.
With Araujo in England, Cortes edging towards the exit and a long season looming, Barcelona’s next move at centre-back will say a lot about how seriously they believe this squad can compete at the very top right now.
