Barcelona and Lamine Yamal Face Real Test Against PSG in Champions League
Barcelona and Lamine Yamal have been unstoppable so far this season, winning all 11 matches they've played. Their upcoming Champions League encounter against Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes will be the true measure of their quality.
Last Year’s Encounter Sets the Stage
Just over a year ago, before facing PSG, Pedri declared that Barcelona were the best team globally, while Yamal expressed their goal to win the Champions League. Yet, the following night at Montjuic saw PSG overturn Barcelona with a 2-1 victory thanks to a late winner from Goncalo Ramos. Despite missing key players, PSG showed dominance and silenced Barcelona's pre-match confidence.
"If you're the best, you have to show it on the pitch, not talk," said Ramos. "We are the European champions; I can't say more than that."
Barcelona’s coach Hansi Flick admitted after the defeat, "There’s no point in saying we’re at the same level as PSG today."
Barcelona’s Season After the Loss
The loss to PSG did not derail Barcelona’s campaign. They won La Liga by eight points over Real Madrid, securing their second consecutive title with a home win on May 10. However, Flick was frustrated by the team’s lack of composure in critical moments, especially conceding a 90th-minute goal.
"When defending at 1-1, you must play smarter in the final moments," Flick said. "We need to stay structured and cover all spaces for the full 90 minutes."
Defensive issues persisted throughout the 2025-26 season, contributing to their exit from the Champions League quarter-finals, where Atletico Madrid eliminated them 3-2 on aggregate without Barcelona ever keeping a clean sheet in 12 games.
Will This Season Be Different?
Offensively, Barcelona seems stronger. The team averages 4.4 goals per game so far. Although they failed to sign striker Julian Alvarez, Raphinha has stepped up impressively, filling the gap left by Robert Lewandowski. Gabriel Jesus is proving to be a promising substitute compared to Ferran Torres, who moved to PSG.
- Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, Anthony Gordon, and Karim Adeyemi are competing for two attacking positions alongside Yamal and Raphinha.
- This depth means coach Flick can rely on potential game-changers even from the bench.
Despite scoring 48 goals across 11 wins, questions about their defense remain, especially since they haven't kept a clean sheet in the Champions League since April 2025.
Signing Rodri, regarded as the world’s top defensive midfielder, is a major boost. His ability to maintain possession and shield the defense addresses weaknesses exposed in last year's match against PSG.
"The midfield battle was decisive," Flick admitted, noting how Pedri and Frenkie de Jong struggled to keep up.
Rodri should help Barcelona control the ball better, but the backline still appears fragile.
Defense Under Scrutiny Ahead of PSG Match
The addition of Joao Cancelo offers flexibility at full-back, covering both sides. This is crucial with defenders Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia unavailable for the trip to Paris. Still, Barcelona’s defense risks collapse if another injury hits goalkeeper Pau Cubarsi.
Confidence remains high, especially since PSG’s left-back Nuno Mendes, the only player to consistently trouble Yamal, is sidelined with a thigh injury. This opens a prime opportunity for Yamal to shine in Paris. The young star openly believes he could claim this year’s Ballon d’Or but admits his record lacks a Champions League winner’s medal.
Coach Luis Enrique noted the Champions League’s new format reduces the significance of league-phase matches, which start in April. He stated, "The teams that are there in April will compete for the trophy." Yet, the upcoming clash feels meaningful for both Yamal and Barcelona, who appear stronger now than when they last faced PSG.
The challenge is clear: they must prove their worth on the pitch, as last year’s match reminded everyone that results speak louder than claims.
