Barcelona's Missed Opportunity with Vinicius Jr

Josep Maria Bartomeu has admitted Barcelona thought they had Vinicius Jr in their hands, only to watch Real Madrid steal in and take the Brazilian teenager from under their noses.

The former Barça president revealed that the Catalan club had reached a preliminary agreement with Vinicius while he was still at Flamengo, with talks advanced enough to involve both his family and his agents. Inside the club, they viewed him as one of the outstanding young prospects in world football and moved early in an attempt to lock down his future.

It never happened.

Madrid arrived late but decisive, closing a deal with Flamengo in May 2017 for the then‑16‑year‑old, with the transfer officially going through once he turned 18 in July 2018. By then, Barcelona’s groundwork counted for little.

“Vinicius Jr was of interest to us (Barca),” Bartomeu told ESPN Deportes. “We spoke with his family, with his agents, and there was indeed an initial agreement. Madrid possibly made a better offer than Barca and took Vinicius.”

Those few words cut straight to the heart of one of the great “what ifs” of recent Clásico history. Barcelona believed they were in pole position. Madrid simply put more on the table and walked away with the player.

The rest of the story has unfolded in white.

Since breaking into Real Madrid’s first team, Vinicius has grown from raw, electric winger into one of the club’s defining stars. Across eight seasons with the senior side, he has racked up 127 goals and 100 assists in 372 appearances in all competitions, numbers that place him among the most productive forwards in Europe.

His impact has gone far beyond statistics. Vinicius has been central to multiple La Liga and Champions League triumphs, his most iconic contribution coming in the 2022 Champions League final in Paris, where he scored the only goal against Liverpool. That night confirmed what Madrid had been building towards: the teenager from Brazil had become one of the most feared attackers on the continent.

For Barcelona, Bartomeu’s revelation lands at a delicate, intriguing moment.

Hansi Flick’s side sit 11 points clear at the top of La Liga with four matches to play. One point from their next clash will be enough to secure the title. And fate, as it so often does in Spanish football, has chosen a familiar stage.

The Blaugrana can seal the championship this weekend, at Camp Nou, against Real Madrid — led by the very forward they once thought was theirs.
