Barcelona Pursues Julián Álvarez as Hansi Flick Demands Center Forward
Hansi Flick has made his demand crystal clear: Barcelona need a center forward, and they need one now.
The position has been a glaring vacancy since Robert Lewandowski left. Ferran Torres’ public doubts about his future at the club have only deepened the urgency. Flick wants a No. 9 to build his new project around, and within the club there is no debate about the preferred option. The name has been underlined in red for almost a year: Julián Álvarez.
Deco in Madrid, Atlético holding the line
Deco has taken that mission onto the road. In the last few hours, the Sporting Director travelled to Madrid, a trip revealed by Jijantes and confirmed by MARCA, with one clear objective: unblock the Álvarez operation.
Atlético de Madrid, though, are not playing along.
The Madrid club have refused to sit down for formal negotiations and have already turned down a 100 million euro offer from Barcelona. Their stance is blunt. If Barça want the Argentine forward, they must pay his release clause, which is believed to be in the region of 500 million euros.
That figure is out of the question at Spotify Camp Nou. Yet Barça are not walking away. Deco’s journey to the capital is about much more than a simple meeting. He is working with Álvarez’s agents to draw up a strategy, probing every angle to see how far they can push Atlético and what levers the player himself might be willing to pull.
Convincing the player, testing Atlético
The trip also carries a symbolic weight. By sitting down again with Álvarez’s camp, Deco wants to send a strong message: Barcelona are serious, and the forward remains a priority for the club.
If there were any lingering doubts in the player’s mind about Barça’s commitment, this is designed to erase them.
Inside the Catalan club, there is a clear belief that the role of Álvarez himself could be decisive. The forward is due to report on the 10th for pre-season training under Diego Simeone. From Barcelona’s offices, the calculation is straightforward: a firm, explicit stance from the player in favour of a move could shift the balance and force Atlético to reconsider their hard line.
The pressure, then, is not only coming from Barcelona. They are hoping it will soon also come from within Atlético’s own dressing room.
Flick’s clock is ticking
Flick, for his part, is not easing off. On Monday, he again pushed internally for the signing of a center forward, underlining how central that piece is to his plan for a competitive, title-chasing squad for the 2025-26 season.
Deco has been working on the Álvarez option for months, alongside members of the board, but the weeks continue to pass without a breakthrough. Atlético’s refusal to negotiate has turned what Barça see as a strategic signing into a drawn-out standoff.
Even so, within the club there is still confidence. Barcelona are prepared to exhaust all reasonable options to bring Álvarez in and have him in the blaugrana squad by 2026-27. They will not, however, go to what they consider “astronomical” financial extremes, nor are they willing to let the saga drag on indefinitely while Flick insists on clarity for his squad planning.
For now, Álvarez remains the main target. The operation is considered difficult, but still feasible.
A decisive week
In the corridors of power at Barcelona, the message is the same: this week will be decisive. Deco’s meetings in Madrid, the conversations with the player’s entourage, and the first steps of Álvarez’s pre-season under Simeone will reveal how much real room there is to manoeuvre.
Either the deal starts to move, or Barça will have to decide how long they can keep waiting for the striker Flick has already built into his blueprint.
