Barcelona Pursues Vangelis Pavlidis Amid Striker Search Challenges
FC Barcelona’s hunt for a new No. 9 has slipped into awkward territory. The big names are blocked, the negotiations are stuck, and a familiar face from a painful Champions League night has reappeared on the radar.
According to Cadena SER, Benfica forward Vangelis Pavlidis has been identified as a serious option to reinforce Barcelona’s attack, as the club’s pursuit of its primary targets runs into one obstacle after another.
Alvarez and Kroupi: doors slammed shut
The plan was clear: bring in a high-profile centre-forward. The execution has been anything but.
Julian Alvarez sits at the top of the list. He remains there in theory, but not in reality. Atletico Madrid have flatly rejected Barcelona’s initial approaches and are standing firm: the Argentine is not for sale. No room for negotiation, no hint of compromise.
Barcelona tried to pivot. Eli Junior Kroupi, the exciting Bournemouth prospect, emerged as an alternative route into the future. That path closed just as quickly. The Premier League club have branded the 20-year-old “untouchable” and are refusing to even open talks over a summer move.

Vangelis Pavlidis is not the glamorous, marquee name that fills presentations and sells shirts overnight. He is, however, a proven, ruthless finisher in European football, and crucially, a far more attainable profile than Kroupi or Alvarez.
At 27, the Greek international offers something Barcelona’s other options do not: a blend of experience and reliability at the top level. His 2025/26 season with SL Benfica underlines that point in bold.
Pavlidis finished as the top scorer in the Primeira Liga, with 22 goals in 33 league matches. Across all competitions, he hit 30 goals in 53 appearances – the kind of sustained output that turns a “Plan C” into a very real solution when the market tightens and budgets bite.

For now, Pavlidis sits in a curious space: attractive, credible, but still not the headline act.
Barcelona’s priority remains unchanged. Julian Alvarez is still the dream signing, the top of the list, the forward they want to build around. As long as there is the slightest chance of movement with Atletico Madrid, the club’s focus will stay there.
Yet the market rarely waits, and neither do opportunities.
