The Athletic Club defender, a World Cup winner and a player who knows La Liga inside out, is open to leaving Bilbao this summer. On paper, it looks simple. Barcelona are treating it as anything but.

Barcelona will only move for Laporte if every legal and contractual element is watertight from day one. That means total clarity on the exact wording and mechanism of any release clause, and a precise understanding of Athletic’s stance before the Catalans even think about making a formal approach.

The insistence on legal certainty has nothing to do with Laporte’s footballing level and everything to do with recent history.
The Nico Williams aftershock
Relations between Barcelona and Athletic have been strained since the Nico Williams saga last summer. The fallout from that episode still lingers, and people at both clubs know it.
That is why any potential Laporte deal must be, in the words often used around the Camp Nou offices, “clean and straightforward”. If there is the slightest hint of a dispute over interpretation of clauses or conditions, Barcelona are prepared to walk away rather than risk another public and legal confrontation with the Basque club.

From a football perspective, Laporte almost feels like a tailor-made solution.
He is experienced. He is left-footed. He is comfortable stepping into midfield and building from the back — exactly the profile Barcelona have been looking at to balance a back line that has leaned heavily on right-footers.
On top of that, he forged a standout partnership with Pau Cubarsí at the World Cup, offering a glimpse of what the pair could look like together week in, week out at club level. For a team trying to build a new defensive core around the young centre-back, that is no small detail.
The temptation is obvious. So is the hesitation.
A deal on Barcelona’s terms
For Barcelona, the equation is clear. If they decide to go for a new central defender before the window shuts, Laporte will be taken very seriously — but only on very specific terms.
The release clause has to be accessible. The mechanism has to be crystal clear. Athletic’s position has to be known and accepted by all parties in advance. Only then will the club move from internal debate to formal action.
If those conditions are met, this could become one of the defining transfer stories of the final weeks of the window. If not, Laporte will remain the perfect fit they chose not to risk.
