Barcelona's Pursuit of Julian Alvarez Hits a Wall
Barcelona’s pursuit of a new No. 9 has hit its first major wall of the summer, and it has the shape of Julian Alvarez.
For weeks, the La Liga champions had identified the Atletico Madrid and Argentina forward as their preferred heir to Robert Lewandowski. They went in hard and early: an opening bid of €100 million. Atletico’s response was blunt. No negotiation, no counter, no crack in the door. Just a flat refusal and a clear message – Alvarez is not for sale.
Alvarez chase grinds to a halt
Inside Barcelona, the mood around the deal has shifted. According to Matteo Moretto on Radio MARCA, the club now considers the signing of Alvarez “impossible”. Not difficult. Not unlikely. Impossible.
That is not for lack of trying. Atletico have stood firm all summer, unmoved by Barcelona’s interest and by Alvarez’s own stance. The 26-year-old has already made it known he wants to leave, and there was hope in Catalonia that his desire could tilt the balance.
Barcelona pushed the idea to its limits. Sporting director Deco even travelled to Madrid this week, sitting down with Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, in a late attempt to unlock the situation. The plan was simple: keep the pressure on, keep the player engaged, and wait for pre-season to do the rest.
There was an expectation that when Alvarez returned to training next week, he might again tell Atletico he wanted out, forcing the club to at least listen to offers. That second push, though, has not changed the landscape. The Rojiblancos have drawn a line and refused to move.
The result is stark. As of now, Barcelona see the Alvarez operation as a lost cause.
Market closes in around Barça
That dead end comes at a delicate time. Barcelona need a centre-forward and have already watched several secondary options slip away.
- Joao Pedro, one of the names on their list, is set to sign a new contract at Chelsea, closing that door.
- Eli Junior Kroupi, another talent tracked by the Catalans, is sidelined for months with injury.
- Fisnik Asllani is heading to RB Leipzig, removing yet another potential solution.
The market is moving. Barcelona, constrained by finances and timing, cannot afford to stand still.
So the search widens.
New names, same urgency
Dusan Vlahovic has been waiting. Now a free agent after leaving Juventus, the Serbian striker has kept the Barcelona option open, hoping the champions would eventually turn his way. Besiktas are already pushing to secure his signature, but Vlahovic has been holding out for a call from Catalonia.
There is also the more explosive, more expensive name: Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian’s camp has offered his services to Barcelona, presenting a marquee option for a club that still dreams in big strokes even while counting every euro.
For now, Barcelona find themselves in a familiar position: a clear need up front, a shrinking list of realistic targets, and a market that rarely waits for anyone.
They walked away from Julian Alvarez. The question now is whether they can walk into a deal that truly reshapes their attack before someone else beats them to it.
