Barcelona's Pursuit of Julian Alvarez Intensifies as Laporta Takes Charge
Barcelona’s summer plan has a single, glaring headline: Julian Alvarez. Everything else is secondary.
The Catalan club have already pushed €100 million onto Atletico Madrid’s table, a package including add-ons that underlines how badly they want the Argentine striker. Atletico did not blink. The offer was rejected, and the message from the Spanish capital has been the same all summer – Alvarez is not for sale to Barcelona.
Yet the proposal has not been withdrawn. It remains there, on a timer.
Barca ready to go higher
According to journalist Santi Ovalle on Cadena SER, Barcelona are not backing off. Far from it. They are prepared to raise their bid, despite suggestions in recent days that they had reached their limit.
The current offer – €100 million, spread across six instalments – is due to expire at the end of the month. To break the deadlock, Barça are ready to sweeten the deal. The fixed fee would stay where it is, but the overall package could climb towards €130 million, driven by additional variables and performance-related add-ons.
It is a familiar Barcelona play: protect cash flow, lean on bonuses, and hope the total number forces a rethink in Madrid.
Laporta steps in
The negotiation has now moved beyond the sporting department. Joan Laporta has stepped directly into the ring.
The Barcelona president is personally handling talks with Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin after a breakdown at sporting-director level. Atletico’s sporting director, according to the same report, has no working relationship with Barcelona’s Deco. When Deco sent a formal proposal, it was effectively sidelined and never escalated to the top decision-makers at the Wanda Metropolitano.
That changed when Laporta intervened. By taking charge, he has turned this into an executive-level battle between two of Spain’s most powerful clubs, with Alvarez at the centre of it.
Atletico hold the line
On Atletico’s side, the message remains uncompromising. Club sources insist they are not willing to negotiate Alvarez’s departure to Barcelona. No door, no discount, no opening – at least publicly.
They have held that line all summer, even after Alvarez publicly stated his desire to leave. Diego Simeone and his staff have made their stance clear on the pitch as well as off it: Alvarez has been ordered to report for pre-season on August 10. He is still part of Atletico’s plans, and they are behaving like a club that expects him to stay.
Barcelona, though, are banking on pressure. They are waiting – and hoping – for another public gesture from Alvarez, something that might crank up the tension inside Atletico and test their resolve.
Few alternatives for Flick
Behind the scenes, Barça are scanning the market. They know they cannot afford to be left without a top-level No. 9 if this chase collapses. But they also believe the pool of strikers who fit Hansi Flick’s demands is painfully small.
That is why Alvarez remains the obsession. The profile, the age, the movement, the work rate – in Barcelona’s eyes, it all fits.
So the offer stays on the table, the numbers are ready to climb, and Laporta is now personally driving the talks. Atletico refuse to budge, the player has already spoken once, and pre-season is looming.
Somewhere between the boardrooms of Barcelona and Madrid, a decision will define not just this window, but the attacking shape of La Liga’s reigning champions for years to come.
