Barcelona Faces RFEF Scrutiny Over Atlético's Julián Álvarez Complaint
The tug-of-war over Julián Álvarez has left the transfer market and walked straight into a courtroom.
FC Barcelona have been formally notified by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) that disciplinary proceedings are underway after a complaint from Atlético Madrid over the Catalan club’s pursuit of the Argentine forward, according to SPORT.
At the heart of the case is a simple accusation with potentially complex consequences: that Barcelona held talks with Álvarez while he remains under contract at Atlético until 2030.
Case opened, clocks ticking
The RFEF has opened a formal file and given Barcelona several days to submit their defence. The letter has arrived, the process is official, and the deadlines are clear.
Inside the club, the legal machinery is already in motion. Barcelona’s lawyers are poring over Atlético’s complaint and preparing a detailed response aimed at dismantling the allegations and protecting the club from any sanction.
Despite the noise, the mood at the Ciutat Esportiva is not one of panic. Quite the opposite. Senior figures at Barça are said to be calm and convinced the case will not bring serious punishment.
Barça’s stance: “We did nothing wrong”
Barcelona’s hierarchy consider Atlético’s complaint to be flimsy. Their argument leans on one key moment in the saga: Álvarez’s own words.
The striker publicly stated his desire to leave Atlético and described playing for Barcelona as a dream. Those comments, in Barça’s eyes, changed the landscape. Shortly after, the Catalan club stepped out from the shadows and put their cards on the table with a formal offer of around €100 million.
From Barcelona’s perspective, that sequence matters. A player publicly declares his wish to go, the club then submits an official bid. They see that as an open, above-board approach, not a covert operation or improper negotiations behind Atlético’s back.
That is the line they intend to defend in front of the RFEF.
Transfer priority, legal storm
On the sporting side, the strategy has not shifted an inch. Deco still has Álvarez ringed in red as the number one target to lead Hansi Flick’s attack. For Barcelona, he is the chosen man to spearhead the forward line.
The problem? Atlético are standing firm. Repeatedly and publicly, they have made it clear they have no intention of negotiating with Barcelona over Álvarez. No meetings, no discounts, no softening of the stance.
Even so, Barcelona’s substantial offer remains on the table – but not for long. The current proposal is expected to expire soon, turning the next few days into a critical window. Either the stalemate cracks, or the deal risks collapsing under its own weight.
A saga with two clocks
While the lawyers trade documents and arguments, the football calendar keeps moving. Álvarez is due back at Atlético Madrid’s pre-season training on 10 August. For now, that is the date circled at the club’s training ground.
Unless the market explodes into life before then, he will report as an Atlético player, even as his name dominates Barcelona’s summer planning and the RFEF’s disciplinary agenda.
What began as a high-stakes transfer chase has now become a three-way battle: Barcelona, Atlético, and the Spanish football authorities. One way or another, the next chapter in this saga will not be written on a pitch, but in an office.
