Barcelona sells Jofre Torrents to Ajax for €6 million
Barcelona have agreed the sale of Jofre Torrents to Ajax, drawing a firm line under the teenager’s time at La Masia and underlining the club’s late-window drive to trim the squad.
The 19-year-old full-back joins the Dutch giants for around €6 million, a package that includes fixed fees and variables, with Barça retaining 50% of his rights. It is a deal that gives the Catalans immediate income while keeping a stake in his future.
Contract signed, Barça chapter closed
The agreement between the clubs was finalised on Thursday night when the transfer documents were signed, closing a cycle that began in 2017, when Torrents arrived at La Masia as a ten-year-old.
He leaves after making four official first-team appearances last season and featuring in this summer’s pre-season friendlies against CE Europa and Birmingham City. A small sample at senior level, but enough to attract Ajax’s attention.
Torrents is now waiting for Barcelona’s final authorisation to travel to Amsterdam. If the green light comes in the next few hours, he will fly immediately, complete his medical and sign a four-year contract that ties him to Ajax until 2028.
If that approval drags, the plan changes slightly. In that case, he would travel on Sunday, watch his new teammates from the stands, and then undergo his medical on Monday.
Ajax test awaits
Ajax host Heerenveen at 16:45 on Sunday in the second round of the Eredivisie, and Torrents’ first taste of Dutch football may well come as an observer rather than a participant.
For the young full-back, this is his first experience outside Spain and it comes at a demanding club where development is non-negotiable and competition is fierce. He will have to fight for minutes with Caio Henrique, signed this summer for €10 million and expected to be a key piece in the left-back rotation.
Barça’s academy exodus gathers pace
Torrents’ departure is another brick in the wall of Deco’s restructuring. The sporting director is intent on reducing the size of the squad before the window closes, and the exits are not expected to stop here.
At least five more departures are on the table. Marc Casado, Hector Fort, Tommy Marques, Guille Fernandez and Toni Fernandez have all been training away from the main group in recent days. Barcelona want to protect them from injury while working on solutions for their futures.
The message is clear: all five are available for transfer and do not figure in Hansi Flick’s plans for the season.
For Torrents, the road now runs through Amsterdam. For Barcelona’s academy hopefuls, the question is who follows him out of the door next.
