Barcelona's Striker Search: Kroupi and Álvarez Updates
Barcelona’s search for the striker to succeed Robert Lewandowski is starting to sprawl across Europe, and the latest name on the radar comes from England’s south coast.
With Julián Álvarez still the preferred option but no closer to arriving, Barça have sounded out Bournemouth over Eli Junior Kroupi, sources have told ESPN. The message back from the Premier League club is predictable: he will not come cheap.
Álvarez still the priority, but deal stuck
Barça’s plan for this window looked clear. Lock down the wide positions, then go all-in on a No.9.
Anthony Gordon is already through the door from Newcastle United. Karim Adeyemi has arrived from Borussia Dortmund. The next step was supposed to be Álvarez, the Argentina international who has told ESPN he wants to leave Atlético Madrid.
President Joan Laporta has gone public on that pursuit. He confirmed that Barça have lodged a formal offer for Álvarez, only to see Atlético knock it back. The bid, Laporta said, is not being withdrawn. It will stay on the table if Atlético soften their stance — but it will not sit there forever.
So far, there is no sign of a breakthrough. And with the clock ticking on a summer in which Hansi Flick wants a retooled forward line, Barcelona have started to look sideways.
Kroupi: from Lorient prospect to €100m question
That is where Eli Junior Kroupi comes in.
The 20-year-old France U21 international has been one of the more eye-catching young forwards in the Premier League since joining Bournemouth from Lorient last summer for around €15 million. In his first season in England he hit 13 goals in 35 appearances, a return that has not gone unnoticed at Europe’s biggest clubs.
Barcelona have now made an enquiry, asking about his availability and the sort of numbers Bournemouth might consider. The answer, according to various reports, is sobering. Bournemouth are reluctant to sell and are expected to demand upwards of €100 million to even think about a deal.
For a player who cost €15m just a year ago, that is a staggering escalation — but it reflects both the Premier League’s financial muscle and the scarcity of high-level No.9s under the age of 22.
Kroupi is not the first young forward to be priced into the stratosphere. He will not be the last. The question for Barça is whether they see him as a genuine Lewandowski heir or simply as leverage while they wait on Álvarez.
Flick reshapes the attack
While the market plays its usual games, Flick’s rebuild is already well under way.
Lewandowski has left for MLS and joined Chicago Fire, ending an era of guaranteed goals and forcing Barça into a more collective approach in the final third. Marcus Rashford has gone back to Manchester United after his loan spell, removing another attacking option from Flick’s board.
Gordon’s arrival gives Barcelona a direct, high-intensity threat from the left. Adeyemi brings pace and chaos from either flank. Both signings hint at a front line built on speed, pressing, and rotation rather than a single fixed reference point.
But Flick still wants a focal striker, a player who can finish moves, occupy centre-backs and anchor the attack in the biggest games. That is why the club keep circling Álvarez and why Kroupi’s name has now been pushed into the conversation.
Uncertainty around Ferran Torres
All of this comes against a backdrop of uncertainty over Ferran Torres.
The Spain forward, who scored the winning goal in the World Cup final against Argentina, sits in a strange place within the squad. Valuable, proven on the biggest stage, but not entirely secure in his role under Flick as the coach leans into a faster, more vertical style.
His future could shape what Barcelona can do next. A significant sale would open space on the wage bill and in the squad, potentially making a big-money move for Álvarez or Kroupi more realistic. Keeping him would give Flick another versatile attacker but might force the club to be more creative in their pursuit of a No.9.
For now, Barcelona are juggling possibilities. A standing offer for Álvarez. A probing call about Kroupi. A coach intent on shaking up a forward line that has dominated LaLiga but fallen short in Europe.
The champions know exactly what they need. The challenge now is finding a striker who fits the vision — and the budget — before someone else snaps him up.
