Barcelona Targets Castello Lukeba in Centre-Back Search
Barcelona’s summer rebuild has a glaring hole at its heart. They need a centre-back. Badly. Yet it is the position where the club have advanced the least, despite a flurry of names flying around in recent weeks.
Aymeric Laporte, Alessandro Bastoni, Castello Lukeba, even Cristian Romero – all have been mentioned, none have come close. Until now, it had been all noise and no traction.
That picture is starting to shift.
Barcelona make their move for Lukeba
According to SPORT, Barcelona have now opened talks with RB Leipzig to ask about Castello Lukeba’s situation and price. Not a vague sounding-out. A direct enquiry.
The attraction is obvious. Lukeba is left-footed, comfortable building from the back and regarded inside the club as an ideal profile for Hansi Flick’s plans. Both Flick and sporting director Deco are described as long-time admirers, with the Frenchman sitting near the top of their defensive wishlist.
At 21, Lukeba is already viewed as one of the most promising young centre-backs in Europe. His performances in the Bundesliga have not gone unnoticed in England either. He has several Premier League options on the table, yet he has stayed put at Leipzig so far.
The badge still matters. A move to Barcelona appeals to him, and he is open to making the jump if the clubs can find an agreement.
For now, Barcelona are testing the waters. Lukeba’s current market value stands at around €30 million, and the Catalan club have called Leipzig to understand what fee they would actually demand in a transfer.
Araujo gone, Kounde in the balance
The urgency is real. Ronald Araujo has already left for Liverpool, ripping a huge piece out of Barcelona’s defensive spine and leaving the back line more exposed than it has been in years.
That departure has pushed the need for a new centre-back right to the top of the agenda. But the next big domino is Jules Kounde.
Kounde has offers in front of him, and a move away cannot be ruled out. His future will heavily shape how far Barcelona are prepared to go for Lukeba.
If Kounde stays, the club may try to be more conservative, looking for value and flexibility. If he leaves, the equation changes. A second major defensive exit would almost force Barcelona into a high-level, high-cost signing to stabilise the back line.
That is where Lukeba’s candidacy gains weight.
Flick’s vetoes narrow the field
The pool of options is already thinner than it looks. Flick is not convinced by some of the names that have circulated. According to the same report, he has pushed back on moves for profiles like Bastoni and Romero, closing off potential paths before they truly opened.
That leaves Barcelona with a shorter list of realistic targets. Laporte remains in the conversation, but with the market moving quickly and the club’s finances still tight, they cannot chase everyone.
In that context, Lukeba stands out: young, left-footed, admired by both coach and sporting director, and open to the move.
The first contact with Leipzig has been made. The next call may depend on one simple question: does Jules Kounde stay and anchor this defence, or does his exit force Barcelona to bet big on the next generation?
